Shimron Hetmyer has replaced injured Justin Greaves in the West Indies squad for the remaining ODIs against New Zealand.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a significant change to its One-Day International (ODI) squad, with experienced batter Shimron Hetmyer replacing the injured Justin Greaves for the remaining two matches of the three-match series against New Zealand.

Greaves was ruled out after sustaining a back injury that also forced him to miss the opening ODI in Providence. Following medical assessment, the all-rounder has returned to Barbados, where he will continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of the West Indies medical team.

Hetmyer Returns After MLC Commitments

Hetmyer’s inclusion comes after the conclusion of his Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 campaign with the Seattle Orcas.

The left-handed batter was initially unavailable for the opening matches against New Zealand due to his franchise commitments. However, with the Seattle Orcas finishing fifth in the standings and missing out on the playoffs, Hetmyer became available earlier than expected and has now linked up with the national squad.

The 29-year-old scored 164 runs in 10 matches during the MLC season, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 136.66. His return is expected to strengthen the West Indies batting order as they look to seal the ODI series.

Another Opportunity for Hetmyer

Hetmyer last featured in an ODI for the West Indies in June 2025.

Although he earned a recall for the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, he did not get an opportunity to play. His latest selection provides another chance to re-establish himself in the Caribbean side’s white-ball plans.

Known for his aggressive stroke play and finishing ability, Hetmyer’s experience could prove valuable as the West Indies look to maintain their winning momentum.

Greaves to Be Monitored Ahead of Pakistan Series

Justin Greaves remains under medical observation and will undergo further assessment before the remaining ODIs against New Zealand and the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.

The all-rounder was in excellent form before the injury, recently earning the Player of the Series award against Sri Lanka after scoring a career-best 180 and playing a pivotal role in West Indies’ historic series triumph.

His absence is a setback, but the team management will hope he recovers in time for the upcoming assignments.
