‘Rao Bahadur will change my career’: Satya Dev reveals why this psychological drama could be his biggest breakthrough yet
With Mahesh Babu backing the film and a physically demanding transformation, Satya Dev says Rao Bahadur is unlike anything Telugu cinema has seen before.
Actor Satya Dev is pinning high hopes on his upcoming film Rao Bahadur, calling it the project that could redefine his career. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on July 3, the actor opened up about the intense preparation, challenging makeover, and emotional significance of having Mahesh Babu present the film under the GMB Entertainments banner.
Speaking about the project, Satya Dev expressed complete confidence in the film and described it as a unique cinematic experience. According to him, Rao Bahadur explores a storytelling style rarely seen in Telugu cinema, making it stand apart from conventional commercial entertainers.
Mahesh Babu’s support makes the journey even more special
One of the most memorable moments for Satya Dev has been receiving appreciation from Mahesh Babu, who watched the film before its release and agreed to present it. The superstar also lent his voice to one of the film’s promotional trailers, a gesture that deeply moved the actor.
Satya Dev reflected on how life had come full circle. Years ago, he shared screen space with Mahesh Babu in Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, where he played the superstar’s friend. Although one of their scenes together was eventually removed from the final cut, the memory stayed with him.
Recalling the incident, Satya Dev said he had proudly told his friends about a scene in which Mahesh Babu placed his arm around his shoulders. However, after the film’s release, the sequence had been deleted, leaving him disappointed. Today, he considers Mahesh Babu presenting Rao Bahadur as a rewarding moment that has made those earlier disappointments feel worthwhile.
Not a horror film, but a psychological drama
While the trailers feature eerie visuals that may give audiences the impression of a horror film, Satya Dev clarified that Rao Bahadur is actually a psychological drama with emotional depth and layered storytelling.
Directed by Venkatesh Maha, the film features Satya Dev as Ramappa, a character belonging to a royal lineage. The actor revealed that there were no historical references available for the role, allowing the creative team to build the character entirely from imagination.
He believes the originality of Ramappa is one of the film’s biggest strengths and hopes the character itself becomes a reference point for future performances.
Five-hour makeup sessions and 18-hour workdays
Preparing for the role demanded extraordinary physical commitment. Satya Dev revealed that his routine often began at 3 a.m., followed by medication before reaching the sets around 4 a.m.
The elaborate makeup process alone lasted between five and six hours, with filming beginning around 9 a.m. He then remained in the heavy prosthetic makeup throughout the day before spending another 90 minutes removing it after shooting wrapped around 9 p.m. Most days ended close to midnight.

The actor admitted that wearing the prosthetics while performing physically demanding scenes made the experience even more challenging. Several action sequences also required support from ropes, making endurance just as important as acting.

Inspired by versatile performers
Satya Dev credited legendary performers such as Kamal Haasan, Vikram, Suriya, and Dhanush for inspiring him to explore unconventional characters throughout his career.
However, he was quick to clarify that he does not consider himself comparable to Kamal Haasan. Addressing comments made by director Venkatesh Maha, Satya Dev explained that the comparison was never intended to place him alongside the legendary actor but to highlight his willingness to experiment with different kinds of cinema.
A film that could change everything
Despite earning praise for several performances over the years, Satya Dev admitted he is still waiting for the breakthrough that establishes him among Telugu cinema’s leading stars.
He acknowledged that some of his earlier films failed to reach wider audiences due to limited promotion or execution issues despite having strong stories. With Rao Bahadur, he believes those shortcomings have finally been addressed.
Calling the film a major turning point in his career, Satya Dev expressed confidence that audiences will embrace it just as they have supported well-made Malayalam and Tamil films dubbed in Telugu.
Apart from Rao Bahadur, the actor has a busy lineup that includes Samavarthi and Full Bottle, promising that each of his upcoming projects will showcase a different side of his acting abilities.
