‘Be Careful, Sanju!’ Manjrekar’s Blunt Warning After Ireland Flop as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Waits in the Wings
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar says Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma cannot afford complacency after India’s opening T20I defeat, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi pushing hard for a place in the playing XI.
India’s disappointing start to the T20I series against Ireland has sparked fresh debate over the team’s batting combination, with former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar issuing a clear warning to Sanju Samson following his underwhelming performance in the series opener.
India suffered a 34-run defeat in the first T20I in Belfast, marking an unfortunate beginning to Shreyas Iyer’s stint as captain. While the loss raised several questions about the team’s overall performance, much of the attention shifted towards the top order after Sanju Samson managed just five runs from four deliveries.
Speaking after the match, Manjrekar suggested that neither Samson nor opening partner Abhishek Sharma should feel secure about their places in the side, especially with teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for his opportunity.
Sooryavanshi’s IPL heroics adding pressure
The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of India’s brightest young prospects after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign for the Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed an astonishing 776 runs. His remarkable performances have intensified calls from fans and experts alike for his international debut.
According to Manjrekar, Sooryavanshi’s presence in the squad naturally creates competition, making it essential for established players to consistently deliver.

He pointed out that while Sooryavanshi is undoubtedly knocking on the door, the batting positions at the top currently belong to Samson and Abhishek. However, he emphasized that poor performances could quickly change that equation.
Would Sooryavanshi have changed the result?
Despite backing the youngster’s immense talent, Manjrekar does not believe that including Sooryavanshi in the first T20I would have dramatically altered the outcome.

The former India batter explained that the challenging conditions in Belfast and the demanding run chase meant every batter faced a difficult task. He noted that even Sooryavanshi, known for his fearless stroke play, would likely have found it difficult to maintain the required scoring rate throughout the innings.
While he acknowledged there could be room for experimentation in the middle order, he maintained that India’s opening combination should remain unchanged for now.
Manjrekar also recalled the youngster’s performances during the Dambulla Tri-Series, where clearing the boundary consistently proved challenging due to the conditions, highlighting that aggressive batting alone is not always enough.
Will India make changes for the second T20I?
Former India batter Paul Valthaty believes the Indian team management is unlikely to overhaul the batting lineup despite the defeat.
Instead, he feels the focus may shift towards strengthening the bowling attack by bringing Ravi Bishnoi back into the playing XI. Valthaty believes the leg-spinner could provide better control during the middle overs, an area where India struggled in the opening encounter.
He also pointed out that the squad touring Ireland does not have many specialist batting alternatives apart from Suryansh Shedge, making a major reshuffle unlikely ahead of the second match.
Selection headache grows
India now heads into the second T20I under pressure to level the series. While the management may stick with experience, the growing excitement surrounding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ensures that every opportunity missed by the current top order will only strengthen the case for his debut.
For Sanju Samson, the upcoming match could be more than just another international appearance—it may be an opportunity to silence critics and reaffirm his place before the next generation comes knocking even louder.
