Former India captain Rohit Sharma has been overtaken as T20I cricket's highest six-hitter by Austria opener Karanbir Singh.

As Rohit Sharma prepares to return to international action in India’s upcoming ODI series against England, the veteran batter has received an unexpected setback away from the 50-over format.

The former Indian captain, long celebrated for his ability to clear the ropes with ease, has officially lost one of the most prestigious records in T20 International cricket. After holding the title of the format’s leading six-hitter for years, Rohit’s reign as the “Sixer King” has finally come to an end.

A Record That Defined Rohit’s T20I Legacy

Before stepping away from T20I cricket following India’s triumphant ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Rohit Sharma had established himself as one of the most destructive batters in the game’s shortest format.

The Mumbai star finished his T20I career with 205 sixes in 159 matches, a remarkable achievement that placed him at the top of the all-time list. For a long period, he remained the only player in international T20 cricket to cross the 200-sixes milestone.

Even after retiring from the format, Rohit’s record remained untouched, further highlighting the consistency and longevity of his power-hitting career.

Karanbir Singh Creates History

That record, however, has now been surpassed by Karanbir Singh, an India-origin cricketer representing Austria on the international stage.

Karanbir produced a breathtaking performance during Austria’s third T20I against Hungary, smashing a stunning 164 runs off just 57 balls. His innings featured a staggering 12 sixes, helping him move past Rohit’s long-standing tally.

With that extraordinary knock, Karanbir’s career six count climbed to 207 sixes in just 60 T20I matches, making him the new record holder for the most sixes in T20 International cricket.

The Austrian opener has also built an impressive overall record, scoring 2,533 runs at an average of 48.71, including four centuries and 20 half-centuries.

A New Name in the Record Books

While Rohit Sharma’s achievements remain among the greatest in world cricket, Karanbir’s rise serves as another reminder of how rapidly the global game is evolving.

Cricket’s growth beyond traditional powerhouses has created opportunities for players from emerging nations to make their mark on the record books. Karanbir’s achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a significant moment for Austrian cricket.

Focus Shifts to England Series

For Rohit Sharma, attention will now turn to India’s three-match ODI series against England, beginning at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 14.

Having already retired from both T20 Internationals and Test cricket, Rohit is currently focused solely on the ODI format. The experienced opener remains a crucial figure in India’s plans and will be eager to lead from the front against a strong English side.

Although the six-hitting record now belongs to someone else, Rohit’s legacy as one of cricket’s greatest white-ball batters remains firmly intact.

And while records are meant to be broken, the impact of Rohit’s fearless batting over the past decade will continue to inspire generations of cricketers around the world.
