IPL’s Costliest Star Takes Massive Pay Cut! Rishabh Pant Returns to Delhi Capitals in Blockbuster Trade Deal
In a move that has sent shockwaves across the Indian Premier League, Rishabh Pant is set to return to Delhi Capitals, ending his brief but underwhelming stint with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The blockbuster trade marks one of the most significant player movements in IPL history and comes with a dramatic financial twist.
Pant, who became the most expensive player ever in IPL auction history when Lucknow acquired him for a staggering ₹27 crore, will now rejoin Delhi Capitals for ₹15 crore. The revised contract represents a massive 44 percent reduction in salary, highlighting how quickly fortunes can change in the high-stakes world of franchise cricket.
The IPL officially confirmed Pant’s return as part of a trade arrangement involving star spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who will head in the opposite direction to Lucknow.
A Dream Partnership That Never Took Off
When Lucknow Super Giants secured Pant’s services at the auction, franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka had envisioned a long-term partnership. There was optimism that the explosive wicketkeeper-batter would lead the franchise for years and help deliver its first IPL title.
However, the reality turned out differently.
Pant struggled to replicate the form that had made him one of the league’s most valuable players. During his first season with LSG, he scored only 269 runs, a significant drop from the impressive 446 runs he had registered in his final season with Delhi Capitals. His second campaign showed only limited improvement, as he managed 312 runs while frequently shifting batting positions throughout the tournament.
The constant changes in the batting order prevented Pant from establishing a consistent role, and Lucknow failed to unlock the full potential of their marquee signing.
Homecoming for Delhi’s Long-Time Leader
Pant’s return marks a homecoming to the franchise where he built his IPL reputation.
Between 2016 and 2024, Pant featured in 111 matches for Delhi Capitals, more than any other player in the franchise’s history. He also captained the side in 43 matches across four seasons, becoming one of the most recognizable faces of the team.

His departure from Delhi before the 2024 auction had surprised fans and cricket experts alike. Months before the auction, Pant had sparked widespread speculation with a cryptic social media post asking whether he would be sold if he entered the auction pool and how much franchises would bid for him.

At the time, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal had publicly indicated that the franchise wanted to retain its star player. Despite those intentions, Pant eventually entered the auction and was snapped up by Lucknow after an intense bidding war.
Now, less than two seasons later, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter finds himself back in familiar colours.
Kuldeep Yadav Heads to Lucknow
While Delhi fans celebrate Pant’s return, Lucknow Super Giants have secured a proven match-winner in Kuldeep Yadav.
The left-arm wrist-spinner joins LSG on his existing ₹13.50 crore contract. Although Kuldeep had a relatively quiet recent season with 10 wickets in 12 matches, his overall contribution to Delhi Capitals has been remarkable.
Since joining the franchise in 2022 after falling out of favour at Kolkata Knight Riders, Kuldeep reinvented himself as one of the IPL’s most reliable wicket-taking bowlers. Over four seasons, he claimed 72 wickets in 65 matches, playing a crucial role in Delhi’s bowling attack.
A Trade That Could Reshape Both Franchises
For Delhi Capitals, Pant’s return restores a familiar leader and fan favourite who understands the franchise’s culture better than anyone else. For Lucknow Super Giants, the acquisition of Kuldeep strengthens their bowling department with an experienced spinner capable of changing games.
As preparations begin for the next IPL season, this high-profile exchange could prove to be one of the defining moves of the year. Whether Pant rediscovers his best form in Delhi and whether Kuldeep thrives in Lucknow will be among the biggest storylines cricket fans will follow closely.
