As discussions continue over Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s long-term ODI plans, head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly made one thing clear inside the dressing room—he wants the veteran opener to play without fear, pressure, or constant scrutiny.

According to sources, Gambhir has asked Rohit to continue batting with the same fearless approach that has defined his illustrious white-ball career, rather than worrying about speculation surrounding the 2027 ODI World Cup and his future with the national team.

The message comes after Rohit’s disappointing outing in the first ODI against England, where he scored just 11 runs off 21 balls before being dismissed by Sam Curran at Edgbaston.

Gambhir Wants Rohit to Trust His Instincts

The Indian team management believes Rohit’s experience and natural attacking game remain invaluable to the side.

Sources suggest Gambhir has reminded the former captain that he has already made enormous contributions to Indian cricket and should continue expressing himself at the crease instead of carrying the burden of outside expectations.

According to those close to the team, the coaching staff feels that players of Rohit’s stature often perform best when they are mentally relaxed and allowed to trust their instincts rather than overthinking every innings.

The focus, they believe, should remain on the present instead of long-term debates surrounding selection or retirement.

World Cup Talk Continues, But Team Stays Focused

Speculation over Rohit’s ODI future has intensified since Shubman Gill took over the captaincy following India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.

With the next ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, questions have emerged over whether the experienced opener will still feature in India’s plans, especially considering he will be over 40 by the time the tournament begins.

However, sources indicate that the current backing from Gambhir has nothing to do with future planning.

Instead, the coaching staff wants Rohit to enjoy complete peace of mind and focus solely on contributing whenever he takes the field.

Rohit’s Numbers Still Speak for Themselves

Despite questions about his future, Rohit’s ODI record remains among the finest in world cricket.

The veteran opener has amassed 11,731 runs in 286 One-Day Internationals at an average of 48.68, including 33 centuries. He also holds the world record for the highest individual ODI score—an incredible 264 runs—and remains the only men’s cricketer to have scored three ODI double centuries.

Since playing under captain Shubman Gill, Rohit has scored 563 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of 46.91, including one century and four half-centuries.

Meanwhile, senior batter Virat Kohli has also continued to impress, scoring 896 runs in 17 ODIs at an average of 64, with four centuries and five fifties.

Eyes on the Second ODI

Although Rohit couldn’t convert his start in Birmingham, he remains a key figure in India’s batting line-up.

Only last month, he played an aggressive knock of 79 runs against Afghanistan, once again demonstrating his ability to dominate bowling attacks at the top of the order.

India’s management now hopes that removing external pressure will allow the experienced opener to produce his best cricket once again.

All eyes will now be on Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, where Rohit Sharma will look to bounce back in the second ODI against England and silence the growing speculation with a trademark captain’s innings.
