IPL 2027 Could Begin Earlier Than Ever… BCCI Eyes 94-Match Mega Season, Biggest Tournament in League History
With 10 franchises, a proposed 94-match schedule and an extended tournament window, IPL 2027 is expected to become the longest and most ambitious edition of the Indian Premier League yet.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 is shaping up to be the most extensive edition in the tournament’s history. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to release the official schedule, early planning indicates that fans could witness a 94-match season, making it the biggest IPL ever.
The expanded format is expected to require a longer tournament window, with the league likely beginning in mid-March and concluding towards the end of May 2027.
When Will IPL 2027 Start?
Based on the current planning and the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), the IPL is expected to follow this tentative schedule:
- Predicted Start Date: March 14, 2027 (Tentative)
- Expected Final: May 30, 2027 (Tentative)
- Total Matches: 94
- Teams: 10 Franchises
- Tournament Duration: Approximately 75–78 days
Although these dates have not been officially confirmed by the BCCI, they align with the board’s long-term broadcasting and scheduling strategy.
Why Is IPL 2027 Becoming Longer?
The expansion is part of the IPL’s long-term growth roadmap approved during the league’s media rights cycle.
The tournament has steadily increased in size:

- 2022–2023: 74 matches
- 2024–2026: 84 matches
- 2027: 94 matches (Expected)
Instead of scheduling multiple double-headers every week, the BCCI is expected to spread the matches across a longer calendar. This approach not only reduces player workload but also protects the league’s valuable prime-time television slots.
BCCI Faces Major Scheduling Challenge
Organising a 94-match tournament will be one of the biggest logistical exercises in IPL history.
One of the biggest challenges will be ensuring the availability of overseas stars. The BCCI will need to coordinate with several international cricket boards, including Cricket Australia, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Cricket South Africa, to secure No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players participating in the tournament.
The availability of leading international cricketers will play a crucial role in maintaining the league’s competitive balance and global appeal.
Two-Phase Schedule Could Return
Another factor that may influence the final fixture list is the possibility of state or regional elections coinciding with the IPL season.

If security concerns arise in any host city, the BCCI could once again adopt its successful two-phase schedule announcement strategy, releasing the first part of the fixtures initially before confirming the remaining matches closer to the tournament.
This method has previously helped the board coordinate with local authorities without disrupting the tournament.
A Bigger IPL Awaits Cricket Fans
If the proposed expansion goes ahead as planned, IPL 2027 will set a new benchmark for franchise cricket. More matches mean more rivalries, more opportunities for emerging players, and an even longer festival of cricket for millions of fans across India and around the world.
While supporters await the official confirmation from the BCCI, all indications suggest that IPL 2027 could become the largest and longest edition in the league’s celebrated history.
