R Ashwin’s MLC Journey Ends Abruptly… San Francisco Unicorns Confirm Injury Blow, Replacement Announced
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been ruled out of the remainder of Major League Cricket 2026 with a knee injury, forcing the San Francisco Unicorns to make an immediate replacement.
Ravichandran Ashwin‘s debut campaign in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 has come to an unfortunate end after the veteran off-spinner was ruled out with a right knee injury.
The San Francisco Unicorns confirmed the development on Wednesday, announcing experienced Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle as Ashwin’s replacement for the remainder of the tournament.
The setback is a disappointing one for both the franchise and cricket fans, who were eager to watch one of India’s greatest spinners make his mark in the rapidly growing American T20 league.
Historic Move Ends Earlier Than Expected
Ashwin’s signing with the San Francisco Unicorns was widely regarded as a landmark moment for Major League Cricket.

Following his retirement from Indian cricket, the 38-year-old became the first Indian cricketer of his stature to represent an overseas franchise in a global T20 competition.
His arrival was expected to boost both the league’s profile and its growing popularity in the United States.
However, injuries limited his participation to just one match, where he featured against the Texas Super Kings. In that game, Ashwin bowled two overs, conceding 24 runs without taking a wicket.
Ashwin Expresses Disappointment
Reacting to the unfortunate news, Ravichandran Ashwin admitted he was disappointed to leave the tournament midway.
The veteran spinner thanked his teammates, coaching staff, franchise management and fans for making his brief stay with the Unicorns memorable.
Although his campaign has ended prematurely, Ashwin said he would continue supporting the team for the rest of the tournament and wished them success in their title challenge.
San Francisco Unicorns Back Their Star Spinner
The San Francisco Unicorns also released a statement expressing disappointment over Ashwin’s injury.

The franchise praised his professionalism, leadership and positive influence within the dressing room, stating that his contribution extended well beyond performances on the field.
Graham Manou, the franchise’s General Manager of Cricket Performance, described Ashwin as an outstanding leader whose experience had made a valuable impact on the entire squad.
The team also wished him a speedy recovery and expressed hope of welcoming him back in future seasons.
Peter Siddle Steps In
To fill the vacancy left by Ashwin, the Unicorns have signed Peter Siddle, the experienced Australian fast bowler known for his consistency across international and franchise cricket.
Siddle’s vast experience is expected to strengthen the Unicorns’ bowling attack as they continue their campaign in the highly competitive MLC 2026 season.
Another Knee Injury Concern
This is not the first time Ashwin has faced knee-related fitness issues.
Earlier, he had also been ruled out of the Big Bash League (BBL) because of a knee problem. While it remains unclear whether the current injury is linked to the previous setback, the recurring concern will likely require careful management before he returns to competitive cricket.
For now, Ravichandran Ashwin’s much-anticipated American cricket journey has been cut short, but fans will be hoping to see the legendary spinner back on the field once he has fully recovered.
