‘Cristiano Will Never Be a Problem’: New Portugal Coach Jorge Jesus Breaks Silence on Ronaldo’s Future and Age
Jorge Jesus says Cristiano Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans, insists age is not an issue, and reveals he will speak to the veteran star before any decision on his international future is made.
New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has addressed the biggest question surrounding the national team since the FIFA World Cup 2026 — the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
During his official unveiling in Lisbon, the 71-year-old coach made it clear that Ronaldo still holds a special place in Portuguese football and remains under consideration for future national team call-ups.
‘Cristiano Is a Symbol of Portugal’
Ronaldo had announced after Portugal’s Round of 16 defeat to Spain that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament. However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner did not retire from international football, leaving the possibility of continuing with Portugal open.
Jesus revealed that he has not yet spoken directly with Ronaldo about his future but intends to do so before making any decisions.
According to the new coach, Ronaldo is one of the greatest symbols in Portugal’s sporting history and will always be respected for his contribution to the national team.
Age Not a Concern
One of the major talking points during the press conference was whether Ronaldo’s age could become a factor in selection decisions.
Jesus firmly dismissed that idea.
The veteran coach, who previously worked with Ronaldo at Al Nassr, said performance and physical condition matter far more than age. He pointed to Ronaldo’s work rate during their time together in Saudi Arabia, saying the forward continued to cover significant distances and maintain impressive speed levels during matches.
Jesus added that he had no issues managing Ronaldo at club level, even when substituting him or leaving him out of the squad for certain matches.

A Familiar Relationship
The coach’s previous experience with Ronaldo could prove important as Portugal enter a new phase.
Jesus managed Ronaldo during his spell at Al Nassr and described the veteran forward as easy to work with and highly professional. He also revealed that several players from Portugal’s current squad have already worked with him in the past, which should help make the transition smoother.
Portugal Begin a New Era

Jesus takes over the national team following Portugal’s disappointing World Cup campaign and the departure of Roberto Martinez.
With decades of experience managing clubs such as Benfica, Sporting CP, Braga, Flamengo, Al Hilal, and Al Nassr, he arrives as one of the most experienced coaches in Portuguese football.
His immediate focus will be preparing Portugal for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, with his first match in charge scheduled against Wales on September 24.
Ronaldo’s International Story Continues
For now, Jorge Jesus has made one thing clear: Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career is not over.
The coach says any final decision will come only after a personal conversation with the 41-year-old superstar, leaving the door open for Ronaldo to continue representing Portugal as the team builds towards future tournaments.
