Aakash Chopra Unveils Alternate India T20I XI! Suryakumar Yadav Back as Captain, Sanju Samson Returns
Amid India’s disappointing UK tour, former opener Aakash Chopra has proposed a fresh-look T20I playing XI, bringing back Suryakumar Yadav as captain and recalling Sanju Samson.
With India’s disappointing run in the ongoing UK tour sparking widespread debate, former cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested a completely revamped T20I playing XI featuring several experienced names alongside emerging talents.
Sharing his views on his YouTube channel, Chopra proposed bringing back Suryakumar Yadav as captain while also recalling Sanju Samson to the side after his omission from the current squad.
The recommendation comes as India continues to struggle in the shortest format, having suffered a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland before conceding the T20I series against England.
Suryakumar Yadav Back as Captain
One of the biggest talking points in Chopra’s selection is the return of Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain.
The explosive batter previously led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title before being replaced as skipper and subsequently left out of the current squad.
Chopra believes the experienced batter should once again lead India’s white-ball side as the team looks to recover from its recent slump.
Sanju Samson Gets Another Chance
Former wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson also finds a place in Chopra’s alternate XI.
Samson was dropped after playing the opening matches of the UK tour, but Chopra feels the Kerala batter deserves another opportunity to establish himself in the middle order.
Rajat Patidar Named Vice-Captain
In a bold move, Chopra handed Rajat Patidar his maiden T20I opportunity and named him vice-captain.
Patidar’s leadership credentials have grown significantly after guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to consecutive IPL titles in 2025 and 2026, making him one of the most talked-about domestic captains in recent years.

Young Talent Gets the Nod
The former India opener also included several young players in his proposed squad.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was picked as an opener despite not featuring in a T20I since 2024, while Dhruv Jurel and Naman Dhir were selected to strengthen the batting lineup.
In the all-rounders’ department, Chopra opted for Krunal Pandya and Anukul Roy, both capable of contributing with both bat and ball.
Experienced Bowling Attack

Chopra’s bowling attack combines experience with proven match-winners.
Veteran swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads the pace unit alongside Mohammed Siraj, while experienced leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal completes the bowling lineup.
The combination aims to provide greater control and experience after India’s bowling unit struggled throughout the England series.

Pressure Mounts on Team India
India’s ongoing struggles have intensified calls for changes following a disappointing tour that included a series loss to Ireland and defeat against England.
While Chopra’s XI remains a personal selection and not an official proposal from the BCCI, it reflects the growing conversation around whether India should blend experienced campaigners with promising youngsters as they prepare for future ICC tournaments.
With major white-ball assignments approaching, discussions over leadership, team balance and player selection are likely to remain in the spotlight.
