Harshit Rana walks off the field after suffering a hamstring injury during the India vs England T20I series, triggering fresh debate over his fitness and selection.

India pacer Harshit Rana has once again found himself at the center of a major selection debate after being ruled out of the ongoing India vs England T20I series with a hamstring injury. The setback has prompted former India cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh to question whether the BCCI and team management rushed the young fast bowler back into international cricket before he had fully regained match fitness.

Harshit’s latest injury comes just months after he battled his way back from knee surgery. The right-arm speedster had already missed the entire IPL 2026 season while recovering and was initially selected for India’s 2026 T20 World Cup squad. However, another injury before the tournament opener forced the selectors to replace him with Mohammed Siraj.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ramesh said the decision to bring Harshit directly into the national setup without competitive cricket raised important questions.

According to Ramesh, a player returning from major knee surgery should ideally prove full fitness in domestic or competitive matches before being considered for international duty. He pointed out that incomplete recovery often increases the risk of secondary injuries such as hamstring or quadriceps strains—exactly what eventually happened to Harshit during the third T20I against England.

The former opener also suggested that India’s selection policies should remain consistent for every player. While making it clear that he was not questioning Harshit’s talent, Ramesh argued that fitness benchmarks should be applied equally across the squad to avoid unnecessary risks.

He further questioned Harshit’s absence from the Zimbabwe tour, saying the decision appeared to indicate that the team management was already aware the pacer might struggle with consecutive assignments rather than it being a simple workload management call.

Meanwhile, India’s injury concerns have extended beyond the pace department. Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was also ruled out of the series, forcing the team to rely on Washington Sundar as the primary spin option. Ramesh observed that the move also raised doubts over the management’s confidence in Ravi Bishnoi, despite him being one of India’s frontline T20 spinners.

Harshit’s latest injury has reignited discussions over workload management, rehabilitation standards and player selection in Indian cricket. With a packed international calendar ahead, experts believe balancing player welfare with team requirements will remain one of the biggest challenges for the Indian team management.

As India continues its campaign against England, the conversation surrounding Harshit Rana’s selection is likely to remain a major talking point, especially if more injury concerns emerge during the series.
