‘Dhurandhar’ Becomes World’s Most-Watched Non-English Film on Netflix, Says Ted Sarandos Here’s Why It Matters
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos says Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster has become the most-watched non-English film globally this year, highlighting the growing international appeal of Indian cinema.
Ranveer Singh’s action blockbuster Dhurandhar has added another milestone to its remarkable journey, this time on the global streaming stage.
Speaking at The Indian Express’ Express Adda, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that Dhurandhar has become the most-watched non-English film on Netflix worldwide this year, underlining the increasing global popularity of Indian cinema.
The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, had already emerged as a major box office success before finding an even larger international audience after its digital release.
‘Bigger Than Every Other Non-English Film’
During the discussion, Sarandos was asked whether India has produced a cultural phenomenon comparable to global hits such as Squid Game or Money Heist.
Responding to the question, he pointed to Dhurandhar as evidence that Indian content is already making a strong global impact.
According to Sarandos, the film became the most-watched non-English movie in the world this year, performing exceptionally well across international markets.
He also noted that its viewership was second only to content from the United States and the United Kingdom, reflecting its broad global appeal.
Indian Content Is Reaching Global Audiences Every Week
Sarandos highlighted the growing influence of Indian entertainment on Netflix, saying the platform has featured at least one Indian film or series in its Global Top 10 every week since 2024.
He attributed this growing international reach to Netflix’s recommendation system, which helps audiences discover content from different countries based on their viewing preferences.
According to Sarandos, viewers around the world have collectively spent 3.5 billion hours watching Indian content on Netflix this year, demonstrating the increasing demand for stories from India.
Cinema Remains India’s Biggest Global Strength
While discussing India’s future in global entertainment, Sarandos suggested that the country’s biggest international successes are likely to continue coming through films.
He pointed to India’s rich cinematic heritage, adding that the country’s long history of filmmaking gives it a unique advantage on the world stage.
Sarandos also recalled Netflix’s early original Indian series Sacred Games, describing it as a turning point that introduced a different style of Indian storytelling to global audiences.

A Blockbuster Franchise Continues to Grow
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, Sanjay Dutt, and Rakesh Bedi.
The first film was released in theatres in December 2025, where it became a commercial blockbuster and broke multiple box office records.

It later premiered on Netflix, attracting a significant international audience before the release of its sequel in March 2026.
Following its theatrical run, the sequel also made its way to streaming and is currently available for Indian audiences on Netflix as well as JioHotstar.
A Milestone for Indian Cinema
The global success of Dhurandhar reflects the growing international appetite for Indian films beyond traditional overseas markets.
With streaming platforms making regional stories more accessible than ever before, Indian cinema continues to expand its global footprint, reaching viewers across continents.
If the film’s performance is any indication, Dhurandhar has become more than just a domestic blockbuster—it has emerged as one of India’s biggest global streaming success stories.
