R Madhavan’s GDN Box Office: Only Rs 2.69 crore in 3 days… can the biopic survive Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC wave?

R Madhavan’s latest biographical drama GDN has struggled to find its footing after releasing alongside Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC, despite recording steady growth through its opening weekend.

R Madhavan’s GDN is struggling at the box office after collecting around Rs 2.69 crore in its opening weekend amid tough competition from Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC.

R Madhavan’s GDN had plenty going for it on paper, but the film has found itself in a difficult position at the box office.

The biographical drama arrived in theatres on August 7, but its release coincided with Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC, creating a tough battle for audience attention. While DC has managed to generate strong momentum, GDN has had to settle for a comparatively slow start.

The film did show improvement over its opening weekend, but the numbers remain modest.

GDN Box Office Collection Day 1

GDN opened to an estimated Rs 0.53 crore net at the domestic box office on Friday.

The opening figure suggested that the film would need strong word-of-mouth and a substantial weekend jump to establish itself in theatres.

That improvement did arrive on Saturday.

On its second day, GDN’s collection reportedly climbed to approximately Rs 0.93 crore, representing a jump of around 75% over its opening-day figure.

Sunday brought another increase.

The film collected approximately Rs 1.23 crore, registering a growth of around 32% compared with Saturday.

Despite the upward trend, the overall total remained relatively low.

After three days, GDN had reportedly collected around Rs 2.69 crore net in India.

Why is GDN struggling despite weekend growth?

The biggest issue for GDN appears to be the lack of strong pre-release buzz.

Unlike films that arrive with extensive promotional campaigns, major fan expectations or strong social-media momentum, GDN entered theatres without generating comparable excitement.

That became an even bigger problem because the film had to compete directly with DC, which reportedly enjoyed a much stronger opening weekend.

When audiences have multiple choices at the box office, films with stronger advance interest and positive early reactions often gain an immediate advantage.

GDN, meanwhile, has been trying to build its audience gradually.

DC has made the competition tougher

The release clash has clearly not worked in GDN’s favour.

DC, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has reportedly crossed the Rs 20 crore mark during its opening weekend, giving it a significant head start over Madhavan’s film.

Strong audience response and favourable reviews have further helped DC dominate conversations around the weekend releases.

That leaves GDN with a difficult challenge: it needs to convince audiences who have already spent their weekend movie budget to choose another film in the coming days.

Can R Madhavan’s GDN bounce back?

There is still a window for GDN to recover.

The film’s weekend trajectory is encouraging in one specific sense: collections increased each day from Friday to Sunday. The problem is that the absolute numbers remain too low.

For GDN to turn things around, positive word-of-mouth will be crucial.

If audiences who have watched the film begin recommending it strongly, weekday collections could remain stable rather than collapsing after the opening weekend. A strong Monday would also provide an important indication of whether the film has found a late audience.

But if Monday sees a steep fall, the road ahead could become considerably tougher.

Another setback for Madhavan?

The performance of GDN is also attracting attention because of R Madhavan’s recent association with biographical cinema.

Madhavan previously starred in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, another Tamil-language biographical film based on the life of scientist Nambi Narayanan.

While Rocketry earned critical appreciation and eventually found an audience, its theatrical performance was considered underwhelming in relation to expectations.

GDN therefore faces additional pressure to prove that a biographical story can still draw substantial audiences in theatres.

The next few days will decide GDN’s fate

GDN’s first three days show a mixed picture.

The positive side is that the film managed to increase its daily collections throughout the weekend. The worrying part is that even after the Sunday rise, its three-day total remained at just around Rs 2.69 crore net.

With DC continuing to dominate the box office and upcoming releases likely to put further pressure on screen availability, GDN has little room for a prolonged slow phase.

For R Madhavan, the next few days could therefore be crucial. If positive word-of-mouth catches on, the film still has a chance to improve its theatrical run. If not, GDN could find itself disappearing from the box-office conversation much sooner than expected.

Note: Box-office figures are based on early reported estimates and may change after final reporting.
