MK Stalin Questions Tamil Nadu Government Over Loss of 151 Super Specialty Medical Seats: ‘Lakhs of Lives Are at Stake’

DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has demanded a detailed explanation from the Tamil Nadu government over the reported elimination of 151 government super specialty medical seats, calling it a matter of public importance that could affect healthcare services across the state.

In a statement shared on X, Stalin said the issue goes beyond education and directly impacts the future availability of specialist doctors in Tamil Nadu.“We have lost 151 future government super specialty doctors who would have served Tamil Nadu. This is an issue that concerns the lives of lakhs of people in the state,” Stalin said.

Raises Questions on Legal Handling

Stalin questioned the manner in which the state handled the matter before the Supreme Court, alleging that the government’s legal strategy lacked urgency.

He asked why senior advocates appointed to represent Tamil Nadu reportedly did not appear during the proceedings and whether delays in appointing legal counsel weakened the state’s case.

According to Stalin, the government failed to make full use of what he described as a strong legal position to protect the state’s interests.

Concerns Over Counselling Process

The DMK chief also raised concerns about the timing of the state’s medical counselling process.

He questioned whether the counselling was conducted before the second round of All India counselling, which allegedly resulted in 151 seats being declared vacant and later transferred to the All India quota.

Stalin suggested that better coordination and timely action could have helped prevent the loss of these seats.

Assembly Resolution and Review Petition

Another issue highlighted by Stalin was the absence of a special resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly opposing the transfer of the super specialty seats.

He noted that demands for such a resolution had been raised during the recent Assembly session but were not acted upon by the government.

The DMK leader also sought an update on the review petition reportedly filed by the state against the Supreme Court’s May 29, 2026 judgment, asking the government to clarify its current legal position.

Stalin contrasted the present situation with what he described as the achievements of the DMK-led UPA government, which secured 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in central educational institutions.

He argued that while earlier efforts had expanded educational opportunities, the reported loss of super specialty seats represented a setback for Tamil Nadu’s medical education system.

Calls for Transparency

Addressing the concerns of government doctors, medical aspirants and the public, Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide a transparent explanation regarding the circumstances that led to the reported loss of the seats.

He stressed that the issue is not merely an administrative matter but one that could influence the future availability of specialist healthcare services across the state.

The Tamil Nadu government has yet to issue a detailed response to Stalin’s allegations. The matter is expected to remain a significant topic of political and public discussion in the coming days.
