Microsoft announces 4,800 job cuts worldwide as Xbox and sales divisions face major restructuring under a new business strategy.

Microsoft has announced a fresh round of layoffs, cutting around 4,800 jobs globally as the technology giant begins its new fiscal year. The decision has affected approximately 2.1% of Microsoft’s worldwide workforce, with the biggest impact being felt in its commercial sales operations and Xbox gaming division.

The announcement has sparked fresh questions about the future direction of one of the world’s biggest technology companies, especially at a time when the industry is undergoing rapid changes driven by artificial intelligence (AI), shifting consumer behaviour, and rising operational costs.

According to an internal message shared with employees, Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman described the layoffs as part of a broader restructuring effort rather than a simple cost-cutting exercise.

“Today we are eliminating around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of our global workforce, as we focus our people, investments, and energy on the priorities that will keep Microsoft positioned to deliver for customers in a fast-changing industry,” Coleman told employees.

The company has not described the move as a direct replacement of workers with AI, but acknowledged that technology is changing how teams operate across Microsoft.

Why Microsoft Announced Layoffs at the Start of Its New Fiscal Year

The timing of the job cuts is not unusual for Microsoft. The company has historically made workforce adjustments around the beginning of its financial year, which starts on July 1.

Last year, Microsoft carried out much larger reductions, eliminating thousands of positions across different departments. The latest layoffs come as the company continues to review investments and reorganise teams to match changing market demands.

Microsoft entered this restructuring phase with a workforce of more than 220,000 employees worldwide.

The announcement also arrives after a difficult period for the company’s stock performance. Investor concerns have increased over massive spending on AI infrastructure and whether those investments will deliver expected returns in the long term.

However, Coleman clarified that the eliminated roles were not simply being replaced by AI.

“I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI,” she said, while recognising that AI is transforming workplace processes.

Xbox Gaming Division Takes Major Hit in Microsoft Restructuring

Among all departments, Xbox appears to be facing one of the biggest changes.

Nearly 1,600 employees from the gaming division are reportedly affected by the latest layoffs. Xbox leadership has also announced plans for further restructuring during the fiscal year.

Asha Sharma, who recently took a leadership role at Xbox, informed employees that the gaming division needs a major operational reset.

She reportedly stated that the business is undergoing changes because its current structure is not delivering the expected results compared with similar gaming platform and publishing companies.

The restructuring will also impact several game studios, including Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs, which are expected to move toward independent operations under new management structures.

Meanwhile, **Arkane Studios’ French branch is reportedly reviewing its future through discussions with employee representatives.

Microsoft Plans Leaner Management Structure

As part of the Xbox transformation, Microsoft is also reducing management layers and simplifying decision-making processes.

The company aims to create a flatter organisational structure, reducing leadership levels in some areas to between three and five layers.

The changes are expected to give teams more independence while allowing faster decision-making across gaming, hardware, services, and content divisions.

Microsoft has also created a new operational leadership role for Helen Chiang, who will oversee multiple areas of Xbox operations.

Microsoft Says More Changes Could Follow

While the latest layoffs represent a significant workforce reduction, Microsoft leadership has warned employees that additional adjustments may happen in the future.

Coleman indicated that the company is still in the early stages of its transformation journey and that other parts of the organisation may need similar changes.

The layoffs highlight a larger trend across the global technology sector, where major companies are balancing investment in emerging technologies like AI with the need to maintain profitability and operational efficiency.

For Microsoft employees, the restructuring marks another period of uncertainty. For investors and industry observers, it signals the company’s attempt to reshape itself for the next phase of technology competition.
