Mercedes-Benz India expects the upcoming locally assembled GLC EV to significantly expand its luxury electric SUV business, with bookings set to open next month.

Mercedes-Benz India is making a bigger push into the country’s luxury electric vehicle market with the upcoming GLC EV. The German luxury carmaker expects the battery-powered SUV to significantly expand the popular GLC family and believes electric models could eventually account for as much as 50% of total GLC sales.

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC EV is expected to be priced at approximately ₹80 lakh to ₹85 lakh and will be locally assembled in India as a completely knocked down (CKD) model.

Bookings are expected to begin next month, while customer deliveries are planned by the end of this year.

Could half of all GLC buyers choose the EV?

Mercedes-Benz India has high expectations from its new electric SUV.

Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the GLC EV would expand the overall GLC portfolio and suggested that he would not be surprised if EV penetration within the GLC line reaches 50%.

That would represent a substantial shift for one of Mercedes-Benz’s important luxury SUV nameplates in India.

The company, however, does not plan to push customers towards a particular powertrain. Instead, buyers will continue to have the freedom to choose between petrol, diesel and electric vehicles depending on their requirements.

GLC EV to become a key locally assembled Mercedes electric SUV

At its expected ₹80-85 lakh positioning, the GLC EV will become an important entry point into Mercedes-Benz India’s locally assembled electric portfolio when it goes on sale.

The company currently locally produces the EQS 450 SUV and EQS 580 SUV, while the ultra-luxury Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV continues to arrive as a completely built unit (CBU).

Mercedes also has the CLA EV, priced at roughly ₹59.5-60 lakh, but sales are not expected to begin until next year.

This leaves the GLC EV with an important role to play in Mercedes-Benz’s immediate electric strategy.

Mercedes isn’t targeting only existing GLC owners

Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz does not expect demand for the electric GLC to come solely from customers replacing their petrol or diesel GLC SUVs.

The company sees several potential groups of buyers, including existing Mercedes owners, customers who have booked the CLA EV, owners of mass-market electric vehicles looking to upgrade to the luxury segment and even first-time luxury car buyers who want their first premium vehicle to be electric.

This could allow the GLC EV to attract customers who may never have previously considered the combustion-powered GLC.

India launch arrives unusually quickly after global debut

Another significant aspect of the GLC EV’s India launch is how quickly Mercedes-Benz has moved towards local production.

According to Iyer, the model is arriving in India within approximately six to seven months of its global debut. Mercedes-Benz has traditionally required roughly 12 to 15 months to introduce locally assembled versions of new models.

“This is the first time a car is being launched within six to seven months of its global debut and being locally produced,” Iyer said.

The significantly shorter localisation timeline indicates the importance Mercedes is placing on the Indian luxury EV market.

Why GLC EV is coming before C-Class EV

The decision to prioritise the GLC EV over an electric C-Class is also closely connected to India’s growing appetite for SUVs.

SUVs have become increasingly important across price segments in the Indian automobile market, and Mercedes believes the GLC body style is better suited to current customer preferences.

Iyer confirmed that a C-Class EV will eventually make its way to India, although a specific launch timeline has not yet been disclosed.

Mercedes says EV demand isn’t the problem

Electric vehicles accounted for approximately 14% of Mercedes-Benz India’s sales last quarter, but the company believes availability rather than customer interest is currently one of the main constraints.

The CLA EV is not yet available for sale, while the EQS 450 SUV reportedly has a waiting period extending through December.

“Demand is quite strong it’s mostly a matter of how well we can supply it,” Iyer said.

Mercedes-Benz’s current Indian sales mix remains relatively balanced between conventional powertrains. Diesel vehicles account for around 40%, while petrol contributes approximately 40-45%. EVs represent roughly 10-15%, with plug-in hybrids remaining a relatively small part of the business.

With local assembly, an SUV body style and an expected ₹80-85 lakh price bracket, the GLC EV could become one of Mercedes-Benz India’s most important electric launches yet.

The bigger test will come after deliveries begin: will one out of every two GLC customers really be ready to leave the fuel pump behind?
