New Delhi: India’s ambitious vision of becoming a major global defence manufacturing hub is rapidly turning into reality. In a landmark achievement, the country’s defence exports reached an all-time high of ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26, reflecting a remarkable 62.66% increase compared to ₹23,622 crore recorded in the previous financial year.

The latest figures released by the Ministry of Defence reveal that India’s defence sector added a record ₹14,802 crore in exports within a single year — the largest annual increase ever recorded. The achievement highlights the growing trust of international buyers in Indian-made military equipment, weapons systems, defence technologies, and strategic platforms.

The export milestone comes alongside another major success. India’s domestic defence production touched a historic ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY2025-26, showcasing the rapid growth of the country’s indigenous defence ecosystem and its increasing self-reliance under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

According to official data, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) accounted for 54.84% of total defence exports, while the private sector contributed 45.16%. What stands out even more is the extraordinary growth recorded by DPSUs, whose exports surged by 151% year-on-year. Meanwhile, private defence companies also posted healthy growth of 14%, reinforcing their expanding role in India’s defence manufacturing landscape.

Industry experts believe that several factors have contributed to this record-breaking performance. These include increased investment in indigenous defence technologies, stronger government support for exports, simplified licensing procedures, strategic international partnerships, and growing global demand for cost-effective yet reliable defence systems produced in India.

Over the past few years, India has successfully expanded its defence export footprint across multiple regions, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Products ranging from missile systems and naval equipment to surveillance technologies and advanced defence platforms are increasingly finding buyers in international markets.

The surge in exports is also being viewed as a strong indicator of India’s evolving position in the global defence industry. Traditionally one of the world’s largest importers of military equipment, India is now steadily transforming into a significant exporter capable of competing with established global defence manufacturers.

As geopolitical challenges continue to reshape defence spending worldwide, India’s expanding manufacturing capabilities and competitive pricing are expected to further strengthen the country’s presence in international defence markets.

With record-breaking production, rising exports, and increasing global confidence in indigenous technology, the Made-in-India defence sector appears poised for another phase of accelerated growth, positioning the nation as a key player in the future of global defence manufacturing.
