Kris Srikkanth Names ‘One Man’ Who Can Win India the 2027 ODI World Cup… And It’s Not Just About Runs
The former India captain backs Virat Kohli as the team’s biggest match-winner while urging Rohit Sharma to keep proving himself ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
With the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup still more than a year away, discussions around India’s squad, leadership, and batting combination have already begun gathering pace. While several positions remain under scrutiny, former India captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth believes one player stands above everyone else when it comes to India’s hopes of lifting the coveted trophy.
According to Srikkanth, Virat Kohli remains India’s biggest asset and the one cricketer capable of inspiring the team to World Cup glory.
The veteran opener praised Kohli’s commitment, consistency, and unmatched energy, saying that the star batter continues to set the benchmark despite questions surrounding his age. At 37, Kohli recently silenced critics with two impressive half-centuries during India’s ODI series in England, proving that he still belongs among the world’s elite batters.
Srikkanth believes Kohli’s greatest strength lies not only in scoring runs but also in the intensity and belief he brings to the dressing room.
Speaking about the batting icon, Srikkanth said that Kohli understands his game better than anyone and requires no reminders from coaches or team management. He added that the same passion that helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) achieve back-to-back success can inspire India on the biggest stage.
According to the former selector, if India is to become world champions in 2027, Virat Kohli will be the central figure leading that charge.
India Still Searching for the Perfect Combination
While Kohli’s place appears secure, India’s ODI squad still has several unanswered questions.

The recent series exposed concerns in multiple departments, especially the absence of a dependable pace-bowling all-rounder whenever Hardik Pandya is unavailable. Injuries to Pandya have repeatedly disrupted the team’s balance, leaving the selectors with difficult decisions ahead of the tournament.
Apart from the all-rounder’s role, India’s batting order and bowling variety also remain areas that require attention before the World Cup in Africa.

Rohit Sharma’s Future Still Under Discussion
Former captain Rohit Sharma also finds himself at the centre of speculation despite producing a memorable century at Lord’s recently.
Srikkanth acknowledged that India’s current team management has consistently maintained that no player is guaranteed a place in the squad. However, he believes Rohit’s aggressive starts at the top remain crucial for India’s success.
He suggested that if Rohit continues scoring consistently over the coming months, he deserves to lead India’s opening attack at the World Cup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Strengthens His Case
Among the emerging contenders, Yashasvi Jaiswal has significantly boosted his credentials.
The young left-hander has reportedly scored two centuries in his last three ODI innings and has impressed across different playing conditions. Srikkanth believes Jaiswal has earned the first opportunity whenever India needs a backup opener.
However, the selection puzzle is far from simple.
With Ishan Kishan also competing for a place as both an opening option and backup wicketkeeper, India’s selectors may only have room for two among Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kishan without upsetting the overall balance of the squad.
Road to the 2027 World Cup Begins Now
As preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup gradually intensify, India will have to find answers to several selection dilemmas. While fresh talent continues to emerge, experienced campaigners like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could still play decisive roles if they maintain their form.
For Kris Srikkanth, though, there is little doubt about the player who can inspire India when the pressure is at its highest.
In his view, if India dreams of bringing the World Cup back home in 2027, Virat Kohli remains the heartbeat of that mission.
