‘Big Relief for India’: Jasprit Bumrah Cleared to Return Before Sri Lanka Tests… Just When the Team Needed Him Most
After weeks of uncertainty, India’s pace spearhead has passed the BCCI fitness assessment, but the team continues to battle multiple injury setbacks ahead of the World Test Championship fixtures.
India have received a timely boost ahead of their crucial two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with Jasprit Bumrah officially cleared to return after successfully completing fitness tests conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Bumrah’s availability had remained uncertain after he suffered an impact injury during India’s recent ODI series against England Cricket Team. The injury forced the star pacer to miss the third ODI at Lord’s, raising concerns about his participation in the upcoming Test assignment.
However, after undergoing extensive rehabilitation and mandatory medical assessments, the premier fast bowler has now been declared fit. According to officials familiar with the development, Bumrah is expected to be available for both Test matches, giving India’s bowling attack a major edge at a critical stage of the ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Bumrah’s Return Comes at the Perfect Time
India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka carries enormous significance. The two-Test series will restart India’s campaign in the 2027-29 World Test Championship after a disappointing start to the cycle.
The first Test is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle International Stadium, while the second Test will be played in Colombo from August 23.
With Bumrah back in the squad, India regain one of the world’s most effective fast bowlers, whose ability to strike with the new ball and reverse swing in subcontinental conditions could prove decisive.

India’s WTC Qualification Battle Gets Tougher
The World Test Championship standings leave India with very little room for error.
India currently occupy fifth place with a points percentage below the leading contenders after an inconsistent campaign. Their last WTC series ended in disappointment when South Africa completed a 2-0 sweep.
Although India later played a one-off Test against Afghanistan, that match was not part of the World Test Championship.
With only nine Tests left in the current cycle, India are widely expected to require victories in the majority of their remaining fixtures to keep hopes of reaching another WTC Final alive. That makes a strong showing in Sri Lanka particularly important before a challenging away tour of New Zealand later this year.
Injury List Still Worries Team India
While Bumrah’s return is undoubtedly positive, India’s medical staff continue to monitor several injured players.
Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is recovering from a quadriceps issue.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar will miss the opening Test after suffering a hamstring strain, and pacer Akash Deep remains in rehabilitation following stress-related back injuries.
These absences mean India’s pace attack and all-round options will still be tested despite Bumrah’s comeback.
Big Opportunity Before New Zealand Challenge
The Sri Lanka series could define India’s World Test Championship campaign. Winning both matches would significantly strengthen their qualification hopes before they travel to New Zealand, where conditions are expected to pose a far tougher challenge.
For now, though, India’s biggest positive is seeing Bumrah back at full fitness. His return not only strengthens the bowling attack but also boosts confidence within the squad as they prepare for one of the most important Test assignments of the WTC cycle.
