Millions of users holding on to older Apple iPhones may have a new reason to rethink their device security. Cybersecurity researchers have revealed a critical flaw in Apple’s older mobile processors that could potentially help hackers bypass some of the security protections built into affected devices.

The vulnerability, discovered by cybersecurity research group Paradigm Shift, reportedly affects devices powered by Apple’s A12 and A13 Bionic chips. This includes popular models such as the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and the iPhone 11 series.

While the flaw does not immediately put users at risk remotely, security experts say its discovery is significant because it targets one of the most sensitive parts of an iPhone’s architecture.

The Vulnerability Hidden Deep Inside the Chip

Researchers have named the exploit “usbliter8”, a vulnerability that reportedly targets the device’s Boot ROM. The Boot ROM is among the very first pieces of code executed when an iPhone powers on and serves as a foundational layer in Apple’s security framework.

Because it operates before the operating system loads, the Boot ROM plays a critical role in verifying software integrity and preventing unauthorized access.

According to researchers, attackers with physical access to a vulnerable device could potentially exploit this flaw through a direct connection. The team has also reportedly demonstrated a proof-of-concept showing how the vulnerability can be triggered.

What makes this discovery particularly important is the location of the flaw. Unlike most software vulnerabilities that can be corrected through updates, Boot ROM code is permanently embedded into the processor during manufacturing.

In simple terms, once the chip leaves the factory, the Boot ROM cannot be modified.

That means affected devices could continue carrying the vulnerability for the remainder of their lifespan, regardless of how many future iOS updates Apple releases.

Security researchers often view hardware-level vulnerabilities as highly valuable because they can sometimes become building blocks for more advanced attacks.
