Hashmatullah Shahidi has resigned as Afghanistan's ODI captain, with Rashid Khan and Ibrahim Zadran among the leading contenders to replace him.

Afghanistan Cricket is set for a leadership transition after Hashmatullah Shahidi announced his resignation as the ODI captain, bringing an end to a successful four-and-a-half-year tenure.

The left-handed batter confirmed his decision through a statement on social media, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaching staff and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for their trust and support during his captaincy. Shahidi, however, will continue to lead Afghanistan in Test cricket.

A Captain Who Changed Afghanistan’s ODI Journey

Shahidi’s tenure will be remembered for guiding Afghanistan through one of the most successful periods in the team’s history.

Under his leadership, Afghanistan enjoyed a memorable campaign at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India, defeating heavyweight teams including England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. Although they narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth, the performances earned widespread praise from the global cricketing community.

His resignation also comes a few months after Richard Pybus replaced Jonathan Trott as Afghanistan’s head coach, marking another significant change in the team’s leadership structure.

Shahidi’s Emotional Farewell

In his statement, Shahidi described captaining Afghanistan as one of the greatest honours of his career.

He thanked his teammates for standing beside him through victories and setbacks while also acknowledging the support of team officials and administrators throughout his tenure.

His message reflected pride in serving the nation and confidence in the team’s future.

Who Could Become Afghanistan’s Next ODI Captain?

With an ODI series against Ireland beginning on August 5, the Afghanistan Cricket Board is expected to appoint a new captain soon.

Several experienced names have emerged as frontrunners.

Ibrahim Zadran, who recently took over as Afghanistan’s T20I captain, is viewed as a strong contender and could be entrusted with leadership in the 50-over format as well.

Star all-rounder Rashid Khan, one of Afghanistan’s most experienced cricketers and a former captain, is also considered a leading candidate due to his vast international experience and leadership credentials.

Another option is veteran all-rounder Gulbadin Naib, who has previously captained Afghanistan and remains an experienced figure within the squad.

A Fresh Start Ahead

The leadership change comes after Afghanistan endured a difficult ODI tour against India, where they were whitewashed 3-0 in the series before also suffering defeat in the one-off Test match.

With the Ireland series fast approaching, the appointment of a new captain will be crucial as Afghanistan looks to rebuild momentum and prepare for future ICC tournaments.

Whether the responsibility falls on Rashid Khan, Ibrahim Zadran, or another senior player, the new skipper will inherit a competitive side eager to continue Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket.
