Hardik Pandya Ruled Out of England ODIs; Virat Kohli Faces Fitness Test Before Squad Call… Will India Get Its Superstars Back in Time?
India’s preparations for the England ODI series have received a setback with Hardik Pandya sidelined due to injury, while Virat Kohli’s selection now hinges on a crucial fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
Team India’s plans for the upcoming ODI series against England cricket team have taken an unexpected turn. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the three-match series due to a quadriceps injury, while batting icon Virat Kohli is set to undergo a fitness evaluation before selectors make a final decision on his inclusion.
The development comes as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares to announce the squad for the England tour, scheduled from July 14 to July 19.
Hardik’s Recovery Takes Longer Than Expected
Hardik’s absence will be a significant blow for India, particularly given his importance as a pace-bowling all-rounder in the ODI format.
According to reports, the 32-year-old has not yet achieved the required bowling workload and physical conditioning needed for competitive 50-over cricket. The all-rounder has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after suffering a quadriceps injury.
The injury had already forced him to miss India’s ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan national cricket team, and medical experts have advised additional recovery time before he returns to international action.
For Indian cricket fans, the news is concerning because Hardik remains a vital component of India’s long-term plans, especially for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Why Hardik’s Absence Matters
Over the last few years, Hardik has evolved into one of India’s most influential white-ball cricketers. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives balance to the team, allowing selectors greater flexibility in squad composition.
Interestingly, the selectors had already rested him from the T20I setup to carefully manage his workload and ensure his availability for ODI cricket. However, the latest setback means his return will be delayed further.
The Mumbai Indians captain has not featured in an ODI since India’s triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy final in Dubai earlier this year, making his continued absence a matter of concern ahead of a busy international calendar.
Virat Kohli’s England Tour Hinges on Fitness Clearance
While Hardik has been ruled out, Virat Kohli’s situation remains far more optimistic.

The former India captain is reportedly progressing well in his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during Indian Premier League 2026. The injury occurred while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru during their successful title-winning campaign.
Kohli’s unbeaten 75-run innings in the IPL final played a crucial role in helping RCB secure victory over Gujarat Titans and claim back-to-back IPL titles.
However, the injury forced him to miss the ongoing Afghanistan ODI series, creating an opportunity for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian lineup.
Fitness Test Scheduled in Bengaluru
The 37-year-old batting superstar is expected to report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence on June 22 for a detailed fitness assessment.
Kohli has already undergone preliminary evaluations and has been following a rehabilitation programme designed by the medical team. He has also remained in consultation with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwalla, who has worked extensively with Indian athletes and serves as a consultant to the BCCI.
If he receives medical clearance, Kohli is likely to be included in the England ODI squad under a “subject to fitness” clause.
England Series Could Shape India’s ODI Roadmap
The upcoming England series carries considerable significance for India’s ODI plans moving forward. With the next World Cup cycle underway, selectors are keen to finalize combinations and evaluate the fitness of senior players.
The three-match ODI series will begin in Birmingham on July 14, followed by matches in Cardiff on July 16 and the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 19.
As selectors finalize the squad in the coming days, all eyes will remain on the fitness reports of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. One appears to be nearing a comeback, while the other faces a longer road to recovery.
For India, the hope is simple: have both match-winners available and fully fit as the team begins preparations for the next major chapter in its ODI journey.
