‘Why Was KL Rahul Missing?’ India’s 3rd ODI Team Selection Raises Eyebrows as Gill Reveals the Real Reason
With the Afghanistan series already secured, India used the final ODI in Chennai to experiment with its bench strength, leaving several senior stars out of the playing XI.
The absence of KL Rahul from India’s playing XI for the third and final ODI against Afghanistan sparked immediate curiosity among fans on Saturday. As social media buzzed with speculation, the answer turned out to be far less dramatic than many expected.
India entered the match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium having already sealed the three-match series with dominant victories in the first two encounters. With the result no longer at stake, the team management opted to use the dead rubber as an opportunity to assess squad depth ahead of a busy international schedule.
Gill Confirms Three Changes
At the toss, Indian captain Shubman Gill confirmed that the hosts had made three changes to the side. Prasidh Krishna, Harsh Dubey and Prince Yadav were included in the playing XI as India looked to provide valuable game time to players waiting on the sidelines.
As a result, KL Rahul, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav were rested for the contest.
Importantly, none of the players were dropped due to poor form or disciplinary concerns. The move was purely tactical, aimed at evaluating India’s bench strength before upcoming challenges, including the highly anticipated tour of England.
A Strategic Call Rather Than a Selection Snub
Rahul’s omission naturally attracted the most attention given his status as one of India’s most experienced ODI batters. However, team insiders indicated that the decision was part of a broader rotation policy.
With India already assured of the series victory, the coaching staff saw little reason to overburden key players. Instead, the focus shifted towards giving opportunities to emerging talents who could play important roles in future assignments.
The decision also reflects India’s growing emphasis on building squad depth across formats, ensuring multiple players remain match-ready throughout a packed cricket calendar.
Opportunity Knocks for Youngsters
The final ODI presented a golden opportunity for younger players to make an impression. Yashasvi Jaiswal retained his place in the side and remained under the spotlight as he continues his bid to secure a regular position in India’s ODI setup.
All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy also featured in the lineup, while the team management continued its assessment of pace options and middle-order combinations.
Interestingly, although Harshit Rana recently returned to the squad after completing rehabilitation, he did not make the final XI despite expectations that he could be handed an opportunity.

Afghanistan Aim to End Tour on a Positive Note
After losing the first two ODIs convincingly, Afghanistan entered the Chennai clash hoping to salvage pride. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first, looking to put scoreboard pressure on the hosts.
The visitors have struggled to match India’s consistency throughout the series, but the final match offered them a chance to demonstrate their fighting spirit and remind the cricketing world of their potential in the 50-over format.
India Focused on the Bigger Picture
While the match itself may not carry significant consequences in terms of the series outcome, India’s selection decisions underline a larger objective. With major overseas assignments approaching and competition for places intensifying, every game is being used to evaluate talent and test combinations.
The absence of KL Rahul, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav was therefore less about exclusion and more about preparation. For the Indian management, the third ODI served as an ideal platform to look beyond the immediate result and towards the challenges that lie ahead.
