‘I’ve Got No Idea’: Aiden Markram Breaks Silence on LSG Captaincy After Rishabh Pant’s Exit… Here’s What He Said
Despite emerging as a leading candidate to captain Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2027, Aiden Markram says the decision rests entirely with the franchise management.
As speculation continues over who will lead Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season, South African batter Aiden Markram has made it clear that he is not thinking about the captaincy just yet.
Speaking to Cricinfo, Markram said he has “no idea” whether he will be entrusted with the leadership role for IPL 2027 and insisted that the decision lies entirely with the franchise management.
Markram Reacts to LSG Captaincy Speculation
With Rishabh Pant stepping down as LSG captain following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign and later moving to Delhi Capitals in a trade involving spinner Kuldeep Yadav, the Lucknow franchise is yet to announce its new skipper.
Markram, who has significant leadership experience with South Africa in T20 cricket, is widely viewed as one of the frontrunners for the role. However, the opener appeared relaxed when asked about the possibility.“I’ve got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There are some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it, I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet,” Markram said.
His comments suggest that while he is open to any role within the team, he is currently focused on contributing as a player rather than thinking about leadership responsibilities.
Leadership Experience Makes Markram a Strong Candidate
Although Markram remains non-committal, his credentials make him a serious contender for the captaincy.
The South African batter has previously captained his national side in the T20 format and has also held leadership responsibilities in franchises owned by the RPSG Group, including teams in SA20 and The Hundred.
This experience, coupled with his calm temperament and tactical understanding of the game, has strengthened his case as LSG search for a new captain.

Markram Enjoying the Fast-Paced T20 Format
Apart from the captaincy discussion, Markram also reflected on the unique challenges of modern T20 cricket, particularly the pace at which matches unfold.“It’s obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side is a challenge. You sometimes think you’ve snuck five in, and you remember there’s still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be.”
He added that he has enjoyed the competitive nature of the tournament and praised the overall standard of cricket.“But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
Markram’s Journey with Lucknow Super Giants

Markram was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹2 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 season and made an immediate impact, scoring 445 runs during his debut campaign with the franchise.
The team retained him for the 2026 season, where he continued to open the batting and contributed 231 runs in 12 matches despite LSG enduring a difficult campaign that saw them finish at the bottom of the points table.
With a captaincy vacancy still unfilled, Markram remains one of the most experienced options available. Whether the franchise hands him the responsibility or opts for another leader is expected to become clear ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
