Hardik Pandya’s reported return to Gujarat Titans has hit a roadblock after captaincy emerged as the key sticking point ahead of IPL 2027.

The twists surrounding Hardik Pandya’s future in the Indian Premier League have taken another turn. The all-rounder is reportedly looking for a move away from Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2027 season, with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders also emerging in the trade conversation.

But there was another option that could have taken Pandya back to familiar territory — Gujarat Titans.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Gujarat Titans were open to the possibility of bringing their former captain back. However, the proposed reunion reportedly ran into trouble when captaincy became a condition attached to Pandya’s return.

Gujarat Titans were reportedly willing to bring him back

Pandya’s connection with Gujarat Titans is difficult to ignore.

He was the franchise’s first captain and led the newly formed team to a remarkable IPL title in 2022. Gujarat followed that triumph by reaching the final again in 2023, establishing Pandya as one of the central figures in the franchise’s early success.

A return, therefore, was not considered impossible.

The report states that Gujarat discussed the possibility with current skipper Shubman Gill, who was reportedly comfortable with Pandya returning to the squad.

However, the situation changed once Pandya’s reported captaincy condition entered the discussion.

According to the report, the franchise was prepared to consider the comeback but did not agree to handing the captaincy back to Pandya.

The captaincy issue became the deal-breaker

This is where the story takes an interesting turn.

For Gujarat Titans, bringing Pandya back as a player and bringing him back as captain are two very different propositions.

The franchise has already built its current leadership structure around Gill. Handing the captaincy back to Pandya would mean reversing a decision that was made after his departure for Mumbai Indians.

The reported rejection suggests that Gujarat are not looking to disrupt Gill’s position, even for a player who previously delivered the franchise its first IPL championship.

Pandya’s camp denies direct negotiations

Amid the growing speculation, Pandya’s spokesperson has offered an important clarification.

According to the statement cited in the report, Pandya has not directly spoken to any franchise about a transfer or trade. Any approach made to the player, the spokesperson said, would have gone through Mumbai Indians.

That clarification means the ongoing reports should be viewed in the context of franchise-level trade discussions rather than as evidence of a completed deal.

For now, Pandya remains a Mumbai Indians player, while his long-term future continues to attract considerable attention.

A complicated Mumbai Indians chapter

Pandya’s second spell with Mumbai Indians has been far more complicated than his first.

After returning to the franchise ahead of the 2024 season, he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain. The decision generated a strong reaction among sections of Mumbai’s fan base, particularly because Rohit had become one of the defining figures in the franchise’s history.

Pandya’s leadership period at Mumbai subsequently came under intense scrutiny, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team.

Now, with Mumbai Indians reportedly considering changes to their squad after the 2026 season, Pandya’s name has once again become central to the IPL transfer conversation.

Where does Hardik go from here?

A Gujarat Titans comeback would have made for one of the most intriguing stories of IPL 2027. The franchise was reportedly open to the idea, but the captaincy question appears to have changed the entire equation.

Pandya still has several possible routes ahead of him. His experience, all-round ability and proven record as an IPL-winning captain make him a valuable player in any trade discussion.

But the latest development also highlights a crucial question: will Pandya be willing to return to a franchise without the captaincy, or will his next move depend on finding a team where he can once again lead from the front?

With the IPL 2027 trade window and auction discussions expected to generate more movement, the answer could become one of the biggest talking points of the upcoming season.

For now, one thing appears clear — Hardik Pandya wanted a Gujarat Titans reunion, but the captaincy issue may have closed that door… at least for now.
