Gautam Gambhir Under Pressure? 3 Big Names Emerge as Front-Runners if India Gets a Separate T20 Coach
India’s record-breaking defeat to England has intensified scrutiny over head coach Gautam Gambhir, with growing calls for the BCCI to consider a dedicated T20 coach. Here are the three strongest contenders if a change is made.
India’s disappointing run in T20 Internationals has sparked fresh debate over the future of Gautam Gambhir as the national team’s head coach. Following a crushing 125-run defeat against England, India’s biggest-ever loss by runs in T20I history, questions are being raised about whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should appoint a specialist coach exclusively for the shortest format.
The defeat extended India’s winless streak in T20Is to five matches. Since lifting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, the Men in Blue have struggled to maintain their dominance in the format, leaving fans frustrated and experts questioning the team’s direction.
Despite guiding India to two ICC trophies during his tenure, Gambhir now finds himself under increasing pressure as expectations continue to rise.
Three Leading Candidates if India Appoints a Separate T20 Coach
1. VVS Laxman – The Experienced Mentor
Former Indian batting great VVS Laxman is widely regarded as one of the strongest contenders for the role.
Having spent several years with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Laxman has played a crucial role in nurturing India’s next generation of cricketers. He has also stepped in as India’s head coach during multiple overseas tours whenever the senior coaching staff was unavailable.
With India expected to tour Zimbabwe again under his leadership, another successful assignment could further strengthen his credentials. His understanding of young talent and the Indian cricket system makes him a dependable option for the BCCI.

2. Dinesh Karthik – The Modern T20 Thinker
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has also emerged as a strong candidate.
After retiring from international cricket, Karthik joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a mentor and played an influential role in the franchise’s recent success. His modern tactical approach and deep understanding of T20 cricket have earned praise across the cricketing world.
The BCCI previously rewarded Gambhir following his successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, and many believe Karthik could follow a similar path if the board looks for fresh leadership in the format.

3. Ashish Nehra – IPL’s Proven Mastermind
Another leading contender is former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra, whose coaching record with the Gujarat Titans has been highly impressive.
Since taking charge of the IPL franchise, Nehra has transformed Gujarat Titans into one of the league’s most consistent teams. The franchise won the IPL title in its debut season and reached two more finals under his guidance.
Known for his simple yet effective coaching philosophy, Nehra has earned praise for helping young players perform under pressure. His impressive T20 coaching credentials make him one of the strongest names if the BCCI decides to separate coaching responsibilities across formats.
No Official Decision Yet
Despite growing speculation, there has been no official indication from the BCCI regarding a coaching reshuffle. Gambhir remains under contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the board has publicly backed the current coaching setup.
However, India’s recent struggles in T20Is have undoubtedly increased the scrutiny on the coaching staff. Should the poor run continue, discussions around appointing a dedicated T20 coach are likely to gain momentum.
If that happens, VVS Laxman, Dinesh Karthik, and Ashish Nehra are expected to be among the leading candidates in what could become one of Indian cricket’s biggest coaching decisions in recent years.
