‘Bogus’ and ‘Harsh’: Why Team USA Cannot Challenge Folarin Balogun’s Controversial World Cup Red Card…
Despite strong protests from Mauricio Pochettino and senior players, FIFA’s tournament rules leave the United States with no avenue to appeal Folarin Balogun’s dismissal ahead of a crucial Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
The United States Men’s National Team may have secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, but celebrations have been overshadowed by a major controversy involving star striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun, who has emerged as one of the standout performers for the United States during the tournament with three goals, was shown a red card during the team’s Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. The incident occurred following a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic, with the referee initially allowing play to continue before overturning the decision after a VAR review.
While the Americans managed to score again and secure qualification despite being reduced to ten men, the bigger concern now is Balogun’s absence for the upcoming knockout clash against Belgium.
Why Can’t the USA Appeal the Red Card?
The frustration inside the American camp has grown after confirmation that FIFA regulations for the 2026 World Cup do not permit teams to appeal red-card suspensions.

According to Article 66.4 of FIFA’s tournament regulations, any player sent off automatically receives a suspension for the following match. The rule applies regardless of whether the dismissal comes directly from the referee or following intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
A FIFA official, speaking about the situation, clarified that tournament regulations offer no mechanism for overturning or challenging such decisions during the competition.
As a result, Balogun is guaranteed to miss the high-stakes encounter against Belgium. Depending on the assessment of FIFA’s disciplinary committee, additional sanctions could also be considered if officials determine the incident warrants further punishment.
Pochettino: ‘It Was Never a Red Card’
Following the match, United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino did not hide his disappointment.
The Argentine manager insisted the challenge was part of a normal footballing action and lacked any malicious intent.
According to Pochettino, Balogun was competing for the ball and simply landed awkwardly after the challenge. The coach described the decision as overly severe and maintained that the striker never intended to injure his opponent.
His comments reflected the mood across the American squad, where players felt the punishment did not match the nature of the incident.

Weston McKennie Calls FIFA Rule ‘Bogus’
Among the most outspoken critics was midfielder Weston McKennie, who questioned both the red card and the inability to appeal it.
McKennie argued that similar challenges throughout the tournament had gone unpunished or resulted in less severe disciplinary action. He described the absence of an appeal process as “bogus” and expressed disappointment over the inconsistency of refereeing decisions.
The midfielder’s frustration highlights a broader debate around the role of VAR and disciplinary procedures in modern football, especially in high-pressure knockout matches where a single decision can significantly impact a team’s World Cup journey.
Christian Pulisic Proud of Team’s Response
American captain Christian Pulisic also disagreed with the dismissal but praised his teammates for their resilience after being reduced to ten men.
Pulisic emphasized that the team showed character by scoring another goal and defending strongly despite the numerical disadvantage. He noted that moments like these test the strength of a squad and believed the United States demonstrated the qualities required to compete deep into the tournament.
The winger said the victory showcased the unity and determination within the squad, even when circumstances did not go according to plan.
Huge Test Awaits Against Belgium
The controversy now shifts focus to the Round of 16, where the United States will face a talented Belgium side without one of their most dangerous attacking players.
Balogun’s absence leaves a significant gap in the American attack, particularly considering his impressive goal-scoring form throughout the tournament. Whether the United States can overcome that setback remains one of the biggest storylines heading into the next stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
For now, despite calls from players and coaches, FIFA’s regulations leave the matter closed — and the United States must prepare for Belgium without their leading scorer.
