Shreyas Iyer says ‘I was expecting it’ after India T20I captaincy appointment ahead of England series

The announcement of a new T20I captain for India has rarely come without debate, but this time, it was the calm confidence of Shreyas Iyer that grabbed headlines rather than controversy.

In a candid admission that has set social media buzzing, Iyer revealed that his elevation to the top leadership role of the Indian T20 side did not come as a shock to him. “Honestly speaking, it’s not outlandish. I was expecting it at some point of time,” he said in a conversation with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s official media channel.

The 31-year-old batter, known for his sharp tactical mind and calm presence under pressure, stepped into the role after Suryakumar Yadav led India through a successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year. The change came after the conclusion of IPL 2026, marking a new direction for India’s shortest format setup.

Interestingly, selectors reportedly considered names like Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma, but ultimately placed their trust in Iyer’s growing leadership résumé and proven IPL success.

What made Iyer’s case compelling was not just consistency with the bat, but his extraordinary captaincy record in the Indian Premier League. Under his leadership, he guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, later taking the unfancied Punjab Kings to the final the following season. Remarkably, he remains the only captain in IPL history to have led three different franchises—also including the Delhi Capitals—to the tournament final.

Statistically, his leadership rise has been backed by form as well. Across the last two IPL seasons, Iyer scored 992 runs at a blistering strike rate of over 145, reinforcing his reputation as both a finisher and anchor when needed.

However, his international captaincy journey has not begun on a perfect note. India suffered a surprising 2-0 series defeat in Ireland during his early stint as T20I skipper. The setback, though unexpected, has added early scrutiny to his leadership approach as India prepare for a much tougher assignment.

Now, all eyes shift to the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, starting in Durham. Iyer, however, appears unfazed by pressure.

“Relentless, ruthless and determined. No pressure, but at the same time, it’s going to be challenging. I thrive under pressure,” he said, reflecting a mindset that India will hope translates into results on the field.

For a player who has built his reputation on resilience and adaptability, this chapter could define not just his captaincy career—but also India’s direction in the post-World Cup T20 era.
