Akshay Kumar’s comedy entertainer Welcome to the Jungle continues to enjoy a successful run at the box office, crossing the ₹100 crore mark in India. While audiences have embraced the film’s humour and star-studded cast, writer Farhad Samji has now shared fascinating insights into the making of the blockbuster, including how the film’s now-famous fourth-wall-breaking interval scene came together.

Speaking about the project, Farhad revealed that bringing Welcome to the Jungle to the big screen was far from easy. The screenplay went through multiple revisions over a period of three and a half years before it finally reached Akshay Kumar.

A Film Years in the Making

According to Farhad, the creative team was determined to make the third instalment of the Welcome franchise feel grander than its predecessors.

That ambition required not only several script rewrites but also assembling one of Bollywood’s biggest ensemble casts, with more than 34 actors appearing in the film.

Farhad said the lengthy writing process helped shape the final story into the large-scale comedy audiences are now enjoying in theatres.

Managing a Massive Ensemble Cast

Handling such a large number of actors could have been challenging, but Farhad believes honesty and transparency made the process much smoother.

He explained that every actor was informed about the importance of their role from the very beginning, ensuring there were no unrealistic expectations.

According to the writer, memorable characters are not defined by screen time alone. Even a brief appearance can leave a lasting impression if the character is written effectively and serves the story.

The Story Behind Akshay Kumar’s Fourth-Wall Break

One of the film’s biggest talking points arrives just before the interval, when Akshay Kumar’s character unexpectedly breaks the fourth wall and directly connects with the audience.

Farhad revealed that the sequence wasn’t originally conceived as a viral or crowd-pleasing moment.

Instead, it emerged while the team was trying to solve a storytelling challenge.

The filmmakers were looking for a way to naturally incorporate a popular song into the narrative without interrupting the film’s momentum. The creative solution was to have Akshay’s character acknowledge the audience directly, resulting in a scene that has since become one of the movie’s most celebrated moments.

Farhad admitted that the overwhelming audience response exceeded the team’s expectations.

Addressing the criticism, Farhad defended the screenplay, stating that every character was written with a distinct personality, individual arc, and unique style of dialogue.

He believes the film succeeds because it delivers wholesome entertainment for families.

Farhad also spoke about changing audience expectations in the post-pandemic era.

He acknowledged that families now think carefully before spending money on a movie outing, making it even more important for filmmakers to deliver an enjoyable theatrical experience.

According to him, when a family spends thousands of rupees on tickets and refreshments, the film must justify both their time and money.
