‘Gambhir and Agarkar not on the same page’? Dinesh Karthik’s blunt warning exposes India’s selection chaos after UK nightmare

India’s disappointing T20I tour of the United Kingdom has sparked fresh questions over the direction of the national team, with former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik suggesting there is an apparent disconnect between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Speaking after India’s difficult run in Ireland and England, Karthik said the team’s inconsistent selections reflected two contrasting approaches. According to him, while the selectors appear focused on building a squad for the future, the coaching staff is prioritising immediate victories, creating uncertainty for players and confusion within the setup.

‘Players are caught in the middle’

Karthik believes the mixed messaging is affecting players’ confidence, especially in a country with India’s incredible depth of talent.

He explained that constant chopping and changing can leave players feeling insecure, knowing that even a couple of poor performances could cost them their place. In his view, such an environment makes it difficult for cricketers to settle and perform freely.

The former India star urged the management to address the issue quickly, saying a united vision is essential if the team wants to build a successful squad for the future.

Selection decisions under the scanner

India’s transition after its T20 World Cup success has already generated intense debate.

One of the biggest talking points has been the omission of Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to T20 World Cup glory before being left out of the new squad. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, cited the need to prepare a younger group for the next ICC cycle, considering both age and recent form.

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain also surprised many observers, especially since he was not part of India’s World Cup-winning squad.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson debate continues

Another major talking point has been the handling of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and experienced wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.

After earning his maiden India call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, the 15-year-old remained on the bench throughout the Ireland series. He eventually made his debut in England after Sanju Samson struggled for runs.

However, Sooryavanshi was given only three matches, scoring 14, 13 and 15 before being dropped again for the final T20I as Samson returned to the playing XI.

The decision drew criticism from several former cricketers, including Kris Srikkanth, who argued that constantly changing youngsters in and out of the side could damage their confidence during the early stages of their careers.

With the disappointing T20I campaign now behind them, Team India will look to reset in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, beginning at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The return of senior stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah provides India with valuable experience as Shubman Gill leads the side into an important phase of preparations for future ICC tournaments.

While the ODI squad offers renewed optimism, the spotlight will remain firmly on whether India’s leadership group can present a clear and unified roadmap after a turbulent T20I transition.
