‘What’s So Special About It?’: Dayanand Shetty Reacts to CID’s Viral ‘Daya Darwaza Tod Do’ Dialogue…
The legendary CID star opens up about how one simple line became a pop-culture phenomenon — and why nobody expected the show to last 21 years.
Mumbai: For an entire generation of Indian television viewers, one line instantly brings back memories of suspense, crime-solving, and broken doors “Daya, darwaza tod do!”
The dialogue, delivered by Shivaji Satam’s iconic character ACP Pradyuman to Dayanand Shetty’s beloved character Daya in the cult crime show CID, has become one of Indian television’s most unforgettable catchphrases. Over the years, it has inspired endless memes, jokes, and comedy sketches, turning into a full-fledged pop-culture moment.
But surprisingly, Dayanand Shetty himself doesn’t see anything extraordinary in the line.
In a recent conversation, when asked if he ever imagined the dialogue would become so iconic, the actor gave an unexpectedly humble response.
He said, “You tell me, what is there in the dialogue? Nothing. You are telling me. There is nothing in the dialogue.”
His reaction reflects how organic the popularity of the phrase truly was.
According to Dayanand, the magic was never in the words themselves but in the larger context the character, the tension of the moment, and Daya’s larger-than-life image as the man who could break down any door with sheer force.
Over time, that recurring sequence became one of CID’s strongest trademarks and one of the most replayed moments in Indian TV history.
The actor also looked back at the journey of CID, revealing that no one on the team believed the show would survive beyond a few months.
Recalling the early days, Dayanand shared that when the show was pitched, the makers had planned only a limited run of 13 to 26 episodes, with the cast expecting it to be a short-term project.

He remembered being told that it was just six months of work a temporary source of income.
What happened next changed television history.
Instead of ending quickly, CID went on to run for an incredible 21 years, crossing 1,500 episodes and becoming one of India’s longest-running and most loved crime dramas.

Dayanand revealed that even as the show kept growing, the team repeatedly believed every extension could be the final one. But audience love kept bringing it back.
The show’s success was built on its gripping murder mysteries, investigative storytelling, and unforgettable characters like ACP Pradyuman, Abhijeet, Daya, and Dr Salunkhe.
Beyond the cases, it was the chemistry between the characters especially the friendship between Abhijeet and Daya, ACP’s famous expressions, and Daya’s explosive entries that turned CID into a cultural institution.
And even years later, one simple command still echoes in fans’ minds proving that sometimes, the simplest lines create the strongest legacy.
