The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper train connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai has entered its final phase before commercial launch, with the trainset arriving at Bengaluru for crucial testing and operational checks.

The new-generation sleeper train has been stationed at Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru for final trials. Officials clarified that the train is currently under the control of Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and has not yet been officially handed over to Indian Railways or South Western Railway.

According to railway officials, the testing process is aimed at ensuring that every system performs as expected before the train receives the necessary approvals for passenger operations.

Final Testing Underway Before Launch

Speaking about the development, Dr. Manjunath Kanamadi, Chief Public Relations Officer of South Western Railway, confirmed that the train has arrived solely for testing purposes.

He stated that the trainset remains with BEML and has been parked at SMVT Bengaluru to facilitate operational inspections and final evaluations before being handed over to railway authorities.

The train has been developed by BEML using technology from Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, reflecting India’s continued push towards manufacturing world-class railway coaches under indigenous technology.

Route to Strengthen Rail Connectivity

Once operational, the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to significantly improve overnight travel between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The service is planned to connect major cities including Bengaluru, Hubballi, Belagavi, Pune and Mumbai, providing passengers with a faster and more comfortable alternative to conventional overnight trains.

Earlier this year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced that the service would begin soon after completing the required testing and certification process.

Modern Design with Premium Comfort

The 16-coach train has been designed to deliver a premium overnight travel experience while maintaining high operational efficiency.

It features:

  • 11 AC Three-Tier coaches
  • 4 AC Two-Tier coaches
  • 1 First AC coach
  • Total passenger capacity of 823 travellers

The train has been engineered to achieve speeds of up to 180 kmph, although operational speeds will depend on track conditions and railway approvals.

Passengers can also expect several modern features, including ergonomically designed berths with enhanced cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules, improved suspension for smoother rides, lower cabin noise, advanced driver assistance systems, emergency talk-back facilities, improved onboard hygiene technology and the Kavach automatic train protection system.

The aerodynamic design of the sleeper train is also expected to improve energy efficiency while enhancing overall performance.

Building on the Success of India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper

The Bengaluru-Mumbai train will become India’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper service after the successful launch of the Howrah–Kamakhya route earlier this year.

The first sleeper service has already reduced travel time by several hours, demonstrating the potential of India’s next-generation long-distance trains.

Railway authorities are expected to announce the official launch date for the Bengaluru-Mumbai service after the successful completion of all safety trials and regulatory approvals.

With its combination of speed, comfort and cutting-edge technology, the new Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to transform overnight rail travel between two of India’s biggest metropolitan regions.
