Ahmedabad to Sabarmati: Why Gujarat’s Popular Vande Bharat Train Is Getting a New Identity… and What It Means for Passengers
The Railway Board has approved a major overhaul for the Ahmedabad-Okha Vande Bharat Express, including a new terminal station, revised timings, an additional stoppage, and even a new name.
A significant change is coming for one of Gujarat’s most popular semi-high-speed rail services.
The Railway Board has approved a major operational revamp of the Vande Bharat Express running between Ahmedabad and Okha. Under the new plan, the train will no longer originate from Ahmedabad railway station. Instead, Sabarmati Railway Station will become its new terminal, leading to a fresh identity as the Sabarmati-Okha Vande Bharat Express.
The move is expected to streamline operations while improving connectivity for passengers travelling across western Gujarat.
A New Beginning from Sabarmati
Since its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2023, the Vande Bharat service has emerged as a preferred travel option for passengers heading towards key destinations such as Rajkot, Jamnagar, Dwarka and Okha.
Initially introduced between Ahmedabad and Jamnagar, the route was later extended to Okha, providing faster access to Gujarat’s coastal belt and religious tourism circuit.
Now, more than two years later, railway authorities have decided to shift the train’s operational base from Ahmedabad to Sabarmati, one of the region’s rapidly developing railway hubs.

Why Is the Terminal Being Shifted?
While railway officials have not publicly cited a single reason behind the decision, industry observers believe the shift aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Sabarmati as a major transportation and railway interchange point.
The station is strategically positioned and offers improved operational flexibility compared to the increasingly busy Ahmedabad railway station. The move is also expected to support future passenger growth and better train management.
In addition, the revised operational plan introduces a new stoppage at Ambli Road, giving commuters another convenient boarding and deboarding option.
New Timings and Uniform Schedule
The approved changes go beyond just a name and terminal shift.
Under the revised schedule, the Sabarmati-Okha Vande Bharat Express will depart from Sabarmati at 6:15 AM and reach Okha in approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes.
The return service will also see changes in its operating pattern.
Previously, the Okha-Ahmedabad service did not run on Wednesdays. Under the new arrangement, both the onward and return journeys will operate six days a week, remaining off the tracks only on Tuesdays.
This synchronization is expected to make travel planning easier for regular passengers.
Key Stations on the Route
The train will continue to serve several important cities and towns across Gujarat, including:

Ambli Road- Sanand
- Viramgam
- Surendranagar
- Wankaner
- Rajkot
- Jamnagar
- Dwarka
- Okha
These stations connect industrial hubs, business centres, tourism destinations and pilgrimage sites, making the route one of the most strategically important corridors in the state.
A Boost for Gujarat’s Rail Connectivity
The Vande Bharat Express has played a major role in transforming rail travel across Gujarat by offering faster journey times, modern amenities and improved passenger comfort.
With the shift to Sabarmati, railway authorities appear to be laying the groundwork for more efficient operations while supporting the long-term growth of high-speed and semi-high-speed rail services in the region.
For passengers, the changes may require some adjustments in travel planning, but the addition of new stoppages and a streamlined schedule could ultimately make the service even more convenient.
As Gujarat continues expanding its transportation infrastructure, the newly renamed Sabarmati-Okha Vande Bharat Express is set to remain one of the state’s flagship rail services.
