‘Bullet Train to Start Next Year’: Ashwini Vaishnaw Reveals First Route, Phased Rollout Plan and New High-Speed Rail Corridors

India’s dream of high-speed rail is moving closer to reality. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the country’s first bullet train service will begin operations in 2027, marking a historic milestone for India’s railway infrastructure.

Speaking at the HYSEA GCCS & IT Roundtable in Hyderabad, the Railway Minister said the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is progressing rapidly and that the first operational stretch will be opened next year.

First Bullet Train Section to Connect Surat and Bilimora

According to Vaishnaw, the inaugural phase of India’s first bullet train service will operate between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat.

The remaining sections of the high-speed rail corridor will be commissioned in stages. The rollout plan includes the following routes:

• Vapi – Surat
• Vapi – Ahmedabad
• Ahmedabad – Thane
• Ahmedabad – Mumbai

The phased approach is expected to ensure smoother implementation while gradually expanding high-speed connectivity across western India.

India Now Has the Capability to Build Bullet Trains

Highlighting the significance of the project, Ashwini Vaishnaw said India has developed the expertise required to construct and operate bullet train infrastructure.

He noted that high-speed rail is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel times and strengthen economic integration between major industrial and commercial centres.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is widely regarded as one of India’s most ambitious transport infrastructure initiatives and is expected to introduce world-class rail technology to the country.

Three New Bullet Train Corridors Planned via Hyderabad

The Railway Minister also announced plans for three additional high-speed rail corridors centred around Hyderabad.

The proposed routes are expected to connect Hyderabad with:

• Pune
• Chennai
• Bengaluru

According to Vaishnaw, these corridors will transform Hyderabad into a major high-speed rail hub while creating stronger economic links across southern and western India.

Travel Times Could Drop Dramatically

The proposed high-speed network is expected to significantly reduce travel durations.

The planned Mumbai–Pune bullet train corridor could shorten the journey between the two cities to just 48 minutes, compared to current travel times.

Similarly, the nearly 500-kilometre Pune–Hyderabad route is expected to take approximately 2 hours and 8 minutes, making intercity travel substantially faster.

The broader network is envisioned to connect cities including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vapi, Thane, Pune and Hyderabad, creating an integrated economic corridor.

Railway Infrastructure Development Continues

Apart from the bullet train project, the minister shared updates on railway modernisation across the country.

He said 261 railway stations have already been redeveloped under the Centre’s “Nav-Nirmaan” programme.

Work is also progressing at Secunderabad Junction railway station, where redevelopment is being carried out while train operations continue. The project includes improvements in passenger facilities, safety measures and the construction of a large air concourse above the platforms.

Boost for Telangana

Vaishnaw also highlighted the Centre’s infrastructure investments in Telangana, stating that the state has benefited from electronics manufacturing initiatives and has received a ₹5,400 crore railway budget.

According to the minister, these investments are expected to accelerate infrastructure development and strengthen the state’s transportation network in the coming years.

While the phased launch of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train marks the beginning of India’s high-speed rail era, the government’s broader vision suggests that similar corridors could eventually reshape travel across several major Indian cities.
