‘If Rohit Is Forced Out, Virat Could Follow…’: Ex-Pakistan Batter’s Big Warning Fuels Retirement Debate
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali believes any pressure on Rohit Sharma to retire could influence Virat Kohli’s future, as speculation over India’s ODI transition continues to dominate headlines.
New Delhi: Fresh speculation surrounding the future of Rohit Sharma has triggered another major debate in the cricketing world, with former Pakistan batter Basit Ali suggesting that any move to push the Indian captain towards retirement could have far-reaching consequences.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit claimed that if Rohit is forced to step away from One-Day Internationals, it could also influence the future plans of Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest modern-day batters.
His remarks come at a time when reports have intensified speculation over Rohit’s ODI future ahead of India’s final match of the series against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
‘If It’s Rohit’s Turn Today…’
Basit argued that experienced players should be judged on their overall contribution rather than a couple of disappointing performances.
According to him, if Rohit continues to perform and remains fit, there is no reason for him to retire solely because of outside pressure or changing team dynamics.
The former Pakistan international also warned that similar pressure could eventually shift towards Virat Kohli.

“If today it is Rohit’s turn, then next time it could be Virat’s,” Basit said, adding that excessive pressure on senior players could lead to emotional retirement decisions that cricket fans are not yet ready to accept.
He also pointed to Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket in May 2025, suggesting that senior cricketers sometimes make unexpected decisions when they feel their future is uncertain.
Spotlight on Rohit’s Future
Questions surrounding Rohit’s future have grown following modest scores of 11 and 26 in the opening two ODIs against England.
Despite the criticism, India’s coaching staff has publicly expressed confidence in the veteran opener.

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak recently described Rohit as “too good” a player to be affected by outside speculation, reiterating the team’s faith in the skipper.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli continues to be a key pillar of India’s ODI setup. The former captain recently played an important knock of 65 runs in Cardiff, although India eventually lost the match by four wickets.
Basit Calls for a Respectful Farewell
Basit also stressed that legendary cricketers deserve the opportunity to leave the game on their own terms.
He said icons like Rohit Sharma should receive a farewell in front of Indian supporters rather than being forced into retirement during an overseas tour.
According to him, players who have served their country for over a decade deserve transparency, respect and the chance to celebrate their careers alongside home fans.
No Official Confirmation Yet
While speculation continues to dominate discussions, there has been no official announcement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future.
India’s immediate focus remains on the final ODI against England, with the team aiming to secure the series.
However, the debate over the future of two of India’s greatest modern-day cricketers—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—is unlikely to fade anytime soon, especially as preparations begin for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
For now, fans will be hoping that the conversation remains about performances on the field rather than retirement announcements off it.
