BCCI Clarifies Rohit Sharma's ODI Future, Says Lord's Match Is Not His Last
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has dismissed reports claiming Rohit Sharma will retire after the third ODI against England at Lord's.

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put an end to speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma‘s ODI future, making it clear that the veteran opener is not retiring after the third ODI against England at Lord’s.

Rumours about Rohit’s future had intensified after reports claimed that the series-deciding match at Lord’s Cricket Ground could be his final appearance in the 50-over format. The speculation quickly spread across social media, prompting reactions from fans and former cricketers.

However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has now dismissed those claims.

BCCI Issues Clear Statement

Speaking on the reports, Saikia said there has been no discussion within the BCCI regarding Rohit playing his last ODI.

According to the board official, the Indian captain remains an integral part of the national team’s ODI plans and will continue to represent the country as long as he remains in contention for selection.

The clarification comes as a major relief for fans who were worried that one of India’s most successful white-ball captains could be nearing the end of his international career.

Retirement Speculation Gained Momentum

The rumours surfaced despite Rohit’s earlier indication that he hopes to continue playing until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Questions over his future gained traction after modest scores of 11 and 26 in the first two One-Day Internationals against England.

Although the experienced opener has not enjoyed the best start to the series, his overall contribution to Indian cricket continues to be widely acknowledged.

Team Management Continues to Back Rohit

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also defended the veteran batter following India’s defeat in Cardiff.

Kotak expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability, saying that players of his stature are not easily affected by external criticism or speculation.

He noted that while Rohit had not converted his starts into big scores in the opening matches, the captain remains one of India’s finest batters and is capable of producing match-winning performances.

Reports Linked Future to Selection Discussions

Several media reports had suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were evaluating the team’s long-term plans ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

The reports also claimed that while Virat Kohli continues to be viewed as an automatic selection because of his form and fitness, Rohit’s place had reportedly come under discussion.

The BCCI’s latest statement, however, has effectively dismissed suggestions that a retirement announcement is imminent.

A Career That Continues

Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut for India against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007, and has since established himself as one of the most accomplished batters in limited-overs cricket.

Having already retired from Test cricket and T20 Internationals, the 39-year-old continues to lead India’s ODI ambitions.

With the BCCI publicly backing its captain, attention will now shift from retirement speculation to India’s quest to clinch the ODI series against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
