‘Asur 3’ Finally Moves Forward: Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti Return as Gaurav Shukla Takes Director’s Chair
The third season of the popular crime thriller is reportedly set to begin filming in September 2026, with Shweta Basu Prasad joining the cast and creator Gaurav Shukla taking over as director.
The wait for Asur 3 may finally be coming to an end.
The much-loved Indian crime thriller is reportedly moving into production, with filming expected to begin in September 2026. According to a report by Pinkvilla, the script has been locked and the team is now preparing for the next chapter of the franchise.
The upcoming season is expected to bring back the show’s two central stars, Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti, while introducing a significant change behind the camera.
Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti return
Warsi is expected to reprise his role as Dhananjay Rajpoot, while Sobti will reportedly return as Nikhil Nair.
Warsi had already confirmed earlier this year that Asur 3 was happening, although he admitted at the time that he had not yet read the complete script.
The actor had indicated that the series would be his next project, making the upcoming season an important addition to his post-Dhamaal 4 lineup.
The return of Warsi and Sobti is particularly significant because their characters were central to the show’s original appeal. Their contrasting personalities and approaches to the investigation helped establish the dynamic that kept viewers invested across the first two seasons.
Gaurav Shukla takes over as director
The biggest change in Asur 3, however, comes from behind the camera.
Gaurav Shukla, who created and wrote the first two seasons, is reportedly stepping into the director’s chair for the third instalment.
The first two seasons were directed by Oni Sen, making Shukla’s move into direction a major creative shift for the franchise.
According to the report, Shukla is also expected to produce the new season, potentially giving him greater creative control over the story and its execution.
For a series whose mythology-driven narrative originated with Shukla, the transition from writer-creator to director could be one of the most interesting developments surrounding Season 3.
Shweta Basu Prasad joins the cast
Adding another layer of intrigue to the upcoming season is Shweta Basu Prasad, who is reportedly joining the cast.
The National Award-winning actress first became widely recognised as a child actor following her performance in Makdee before building a diverse career across films and streaming projects.
Her character in Asur 3 has not yet been revealed, so it remains unclear whether she will play an investigator, a new antagonist or a character connected to the show’s increasingly complex mythology.
For now, the casting itself is likely to generate curiosity among fans.
Why ‘Asur’ became such a phenomenon
When Asur premiered in 2020, it stood out from the crowded Indian crime-thriller landscape by combining criminal investigation with Hindu mythology, psychology and serial-killer storytelling.
The series created a world in which ancient beliefs and modern forensic investigation existed alongside each other, giving the narrative a distinctive identity.
The second season arrived in 2023, continuing the story and expanding the show’s mythology while retaining its darker psychological tone.

Both seasons developed a loyal following, leaving viewers waiting for a third chapter.
Where will ‘Asur 3’ stream?
One important detail remains unclear: the streaming platform for Season 3 has not yet been officially confirmed.
The first season premiered on Voot, while the second season moved to JioCinema. With India’s streaming landscape having changed considerably since the previous season, the eventual home of Asur 3 will be closely watched.
An official announcement from the makers should provide clarity on the platform, release schedule and additional cast members.
What’s next for Arshad Warsi?
The third season also arrives at an interesting point in Arshad Warsi’s career.

The actor recently appeared in Dhamaal 4, which reportedly collected ₹164.75 crore domestically and ₹226.54 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk.
Warsi is also associated with the upcoming Golmaal 5, which features an ensemble including Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Sharman Joshi, Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor.
However, reports suggesting a December release for Golmaal 5 have been denied by the makers, leaving its exact release timeline uncertain.
With Asur 3 reportedly scheduled to begin filming in September, the thriller could become Warsi’s immediate major project.
The wait may finally be ending
For fans who have been waiting since 2023, the latest development is significant.
The return of Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti, the addition of Shweta Basu Prasad, and Gaurav Shukla taking over direction give the third season a noticeably different setup while retaining the core creative team behind the franchise.
With the script reportedly locked and filming expected to begin in September, Asur 3 appears closer than ever.
The only question is whether the third chapter can recreate the mystery, mythology and psychological tension that made Asur such a standout in the first place.
