Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has celebrated the 40th anniversary of the iconic 1986 film Karma, calling it one of the most defining moments of his career. Sharing an emotional note on social media, the actor reflected on how the blockbuster changed his journey in Hindi cinema and helped him establish himself as a mainstream commercial star.
Taking to Instagram, Kher expressed gratitude for being part of the film, describing it as a life-changing experience filled with unforgettable memories.
‘Karma’ opened the doors to commercial cinema
Looking back at his early years in the film industry, Anupam Kher recalled that while Saaransh earned him recognition as a serious performer, Karma introduced him to the world of big-budget commercial cinema.
The actor shared that the success of the film brought him into the larger-than-life world of mainstream Bollywood, a transition he cherished throughout his career.
Directed by Subhash Ghai, Karma was released in 1986 and featured an ensemble cast including Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon, Satyanarayana Kaikala, and Anupam Kher.

Working with Dilip Kumar was the greatest reward
For Kher, the biggest takeaway from Karma was not just its commercial success but the opportunity to share screen space with legendary actor Dilip Kumar.
Reflecting on the experience, he said observing the veteran actor’s performances, expressions and quiet moments became an invaluable learning experience. According to Kher, working alongside Dilip Kumar remains one of the greatest honours of his acting career.
He also thanked filmmaker Subhash Ghai for casting him as Dr. Dang, a character that went on to become one of the memorable roles in his filmography.
Busy schedule ahead
Apart from celebrating the milestone, Anupam Kher is also preparing for a busy phase in his career.
The actor recently completed filming for Yeh Prem Mol Liya, directed by Sooraj Barjatya. Backed by Rajshri Productions in association with Mahaveer Jain Films, the film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari in the lead roles and is expected to hit theatres after Diwali.
Kher is also set to return in the much-awaited sequel to Khosla Ka Ghosla, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 28 during the Raksha Bandhan weekend.
As he marks four decades of Karma, Anupam Kher’s heartfelt tribute serves as a reminder of a film that not only became a Bollywood classic but also played a pivotal role in shaping one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated careers.
