DC Box Office Day 1: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Big Acting Debut Opens at ₹4 Crore… But Tamil Nadu Holds the Key
Lokesh Kanagaraj has swapped the director’s chair for the lead role in Arun Matheswaran’s action drama DC, which opened with an estimated ₹4.10 crore net in India.
After delivering some of Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbusters from behind the camera, Lokesh Kanagaraj has now taken a completely different route — stepping in front of it.
His much-awaited acting debut, DC, opened in theatres on August 8 and recorded a modest start at the Indian box office. Directed by Arun Matheswaran, the Tamil action drama has attracted considerable attention because of Kanagaraj’s first major outing as a lead actor and the presence of Wamiqa Gabbi as the female lead.
According to Sacnilk estimates, DC collected around ₹4.10 crore net in India on Day 1. The film registered these numbers across approximately 3,504 shows, taking its India gross collection to around ₹4.70 crore.
With another estimated ₹1 crore gross from overseas markets, the film’s worldwide gross currently stands at approximately ₹5.70 crore after its opening day.
Tamil Nadu Emerges As DC’s Strongest Market
Unsurprisingly, Tamil Nadu led the box-office performance for DC on Day 1.
The film reportedly collected around ₹2 crore gross from the state, making it the biggest contributor to its opening-day India business.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana followed with approximately ₹1.40 crore, while Karnataka contributed around ₹60 lakh.
Meanwhile, Kerala added nearly ₹40 lakh, with the remaining parts of India contributing another ₹30 lakh.
The regional breakdown shows that the film’s theatrical performance is currently heavily dependent on the Tamil market. The coming weekend will therefore be crucial in determining whether DC can build stronger momentum.
Lokesh Kanagaraj Steps Into The Spotlight
The biggest talking point around DC is undoubtedly Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Known for directing films such as Kaithi, Master, Vikram and Leo, Kanagaraj has established himself as one of the most prominent filmmakers in contemporary Tamil cinema.
This time, however, he is playing the central character himself.
Kanagaraj portrays Devadas, a rugged outlaw whose life revolves around violence, danger and an increasingly complicated struggle for survival.
For an actor making his lead debut, the opening is not exactly explosive, but the film’s performance over the next few days will be more important than its first-day figure.
What Is DC About?
Directed by Arun Matheswaran, DC follows Devadas, a hardened outlaw caught in a dangerous world where betrayal can come from the people closest to him.
His journey is intertwined with Chandra, played by Wamiqa Gabbi. The two find themselves surrounded by threats as they attempt to survive while figuring out whom they can actually trust.
The film blends action, crime and an intense relationship-driven narrative, with Devadas and Chandra at the centre of the conflict.

A ₹4.10 crore net opening gives DC a foundation, but it is far too early to predict its final theatrical outcome.

At the same time, the opening suggests that the film will need stronger collections over the weekend to turn its theatrical run into a major success.
