Antonio Banderas says his 2017 heart attack inspired him to leave Hollywood behind and return to his hometown of Málaga, Spain.

Antonio Banderas has opened up about the deeply personal reason behind his decision to leave Hollywood and return to his hometown of Málaga, Spain. The acclaimed actor revealed that a serious heart attack in 2017 became a turning point in his life, helping him reassess his priorities and embrace a simpler way of living.

In a recent interview, the 65-year-old actor reflected on his years in the United States, his successful Hollywood career, and the health scare that ultimately led him back to his roots.

A health scare that changed everything

Banderas described the heart attack as a powerful wake-up call that transformed the way he viewed life.

According to the actor, coming so close to a life-threatening situation made him realise how much time people often spend worrying about things that have little real importance. He said the experience gave him a new perspective, comparing it to finally putting on a pair of glasses after years of seeing the world unclearly.

Rather than dwelling on the frightening episode, Banderas believes it ultimately had a positive impact, calling it one of the most significant moments of his life.

‘I belonged in Málaga, not Malibu’

Reflecting on his years in the United States, Banderas admitted that while he enjoyed his Hollywood journey, he always felt it would not be permanent.

The actor said he had always known that Málaga, the city where he was born, remained his true home. Although he spent years living in Malibu, he never felt that it was where he was meant to stay forever.

His return to Spain, he explained, was driven by a desire to reconnect with his roots and enjoy a more meaningful and balanced life.

Melanie Griffith introduced him to America

Banderas also spoke warmly about his relationship with former wife Melanie Griffith, crediting her for introducing him to life in the United States.

He explained that after falling in love with Griffith, moving to America became the natural decision, especially as she was raising her two children, Dakota Johnson and Alexander Bauer. Their marriage later welcomed daughter Stella, and although the couple separated in 2015, Banderas said they have remained close friends.

Describing their relationship today, the actor said Griffith continues to be one of the most important people in his life.

An unforgettable Hollywood journey

During his years in Hollywood, Antonio Banderas starred in several memorable films, including Interview with the Vampire, Evita, and Desperado, becoming one of the most recognised international actors in American cinema.

Now settled back in Spain, the actor says he appreciates life differently, choosing to focus on family, health and personal happiness rather than the pressures of Hollywood.

His reflections serve as a reminder that even after decades of global success, sometimes the greatest journey is returning home.
