‘England Will Have to Change Their Strategy’: Abhishek Nayar Explains Why Rohit Sharma’s Return Could Change Everything
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav will play crucial roles as India look to bounce back in the ODI series against England.
Ahead of India’s highly anticipated ODI series against England cricket team, former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has backed the return of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, saying their experience could significantly improve India’s chances.
India heads into the three-match ODI series looking to recover after a disappointing T20I campaign, and Nayar believes the return of experienced players will provide both stability and confidence.
‘England Will Have to Bowl Differently’
One of the biggest talking points during India’s recent T20I series was the batters’ struggle against aggressive short-pitched bowling.
According to Nayar, Rohit Sharma is one of the few batters who not only handles the short ball comfortably but often turns it into a scoring opportunity.
He believes Rohit’s presence, alongside captain Shubman Gill, could force England’s bowlers to rethink their plans.

Nayar said top-class players don’t change their own game to suit opponents. Instead, they make the opposition alter its strategy.
He added that Rohit’s proven success in overseas conditions, particularly against pace and bounce, gives India a major advantage heading into an important ODI series.
Bumrah’s Return Adds Balance
Nayar also welcomed the comeback of Jasprit Bumrah, describing the pace spearhead as one of India’s biggest strengths in 50-over cricket.
While acknowledging Bumrah’s long absence from ODIs, Nayar expressed confidence that the fast bowler’s experience would help him carefully manage his workload.
According to him, Bumrah’s ability to bowl in different phases of an innings, adjust his pace, and deliver accurate slower balls makes him one of the world’s most complete white-ball bowlers.
He also suggested that India should use Bumrah wisely throughout the series and avoid overburdening him as he returns to regular international cricket.

Kuldeep Yadav Can Shine in English Conditions
Nayar also spoke highly of Kuldeep Yadav, believing England’s pitches could suit the left-arm wrist spinner despite a relatively quiet IPL season.
He noted that Kuldeep has developed greater control over his pace in recent years and now varies his deliveries more effectively than before.
According to Nayar, English conditions often offer just enough assistance for quality wrist spinners, allowing Kuldeep to become even more dangerous if he finds rhythm.
Backing from Team Management Is Crucial
While praising Kuldeep’s improvements, Nayar also highlighted the importance of giving spinners confidence through consistent opportunities.
He believes players perform best when they clearly understand their role within the team and receive continued backing from the management.
If Kuldeep is selected for the ODI series, Nayar feels he should be given a sustained run rather than being rotated frequently.
India Aim for Strong ODI Comeback
With Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and several senior players returning to the squad, India will be hoping to make a strong statement against England.
The ODI series also provides an important opportunity for the team management to assess combinations and build momentum ahead of future ICC tournaments, making every performance significant.
