Bengaluru: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Karnataka on September 18 for a two-day visit, with his engagements in Hubballi and Belagavi attracting attention not only for their official significance but also for what they could mean for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Karnataka unit. Reports say senior state BJP leaders are expected to be present during the visit.

At the centre of the political interest is B Y Vijayendra, the Karnataka BJP president, who is expected to interact with Shah and brief him on recent developments in the state party organisation.

Vijayendra Expected to Meet Amit Shah

Shah is expected to reach Hubballi on the night of September 18 and stay in the city before attending scheduled programmes the following day. On September 19, he is due to participate in events connected with a new KLE medical college and hospital near Hubballi and later travel to Belagavi district.

The visit provides an important opportunity for Vijayendra to discuss the BJP’s political and organisational situation in Karnataka with one of the party’s most influential national leaders.

Recent reports have put particular focus on internal discussions surrounding the Karnataka BJP president’s post, making any interaction between Shah and Vijayendra politically significant.

Leadership Speculation Refuses to Go Away

Vijayendra has headed the Karnataka BJP since November 2023. His approaching three-year mark has renewed discussion over whether the party’s central leadership could make changes to the state organisation. His official profile confirms that he has served as state president since 2023, while contemporary reporting from the time records his appointment in November that year.

The leadership question has surfaced repeatedly within the state unit. Earlier this year, an audio controversy also brought the duration of Vijayendra’s tenure and the possibility of a change into public discussion, although the former chief minister linked to the purported conversation disputed ownership of the audio.

Against that backdrop, Shah’s visit is being closely watched for any indication of how the BJP’s central leadership intends to approach the state unit in the months ahead.

Ballari Chalo Likely to Feature in Discussions

Another subject likely to figure in the political conversation is the BJP’s recently concluded Ballari Chalo padayatra.

Led by Vijayendra, the 10-day march culminated in Ballari on September 10. During the campaign, the Karnataka BJP raised issues including rural infrastructure and levelled allegations of corruption and maladministration against the Congress government. Vijayendra also said the party intended to continue its campaign against the state government beyond the conclusion of the march.

Vijayendra has separately said that the BJP plans to contest the 2028 Karnataka Assembly election under collective leadership and work under the guidance of the party’s national leadership, including Shah.

For now, there has been no publicly confirmed announcement that Shah’s Karnataka trip will result in a decision on the state president’s post.
