Sediqullah Atal Creates Birthday ODI History With 143, Surpasses Tom Latham and Joins Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli…
Afghanistan batter Sediqullah Atal produced a stunning 143-run knock against Ireland on his 25th birthday, breaking a unique ODI record previously held by Tom Latham and entering a list that includes Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
Sediqullah Atal turned his 25th birthday into a memorable chapter in Afghanistan cricket history, smashing a magnificent 143 off 120 balls against Ireland in the fourth ODI in Belfast on Wednesday.
The left-handed opener’s sensational innings did more than propel Afghanistan to a commanding total. It also saw him create a unique ODI birthday record, surpassing New Zealand’s Tom Latham for the highest individual score by a batter on their birthday.
Atal’s innings featured 17 fours and four sixes, taking his second ODI century to another level and helping Afghanistan post an imposing 343/9 in 50 overs.
The performance was particularly impressive considering Atal had managed scores of only 42 and 0 in the previous two ODIs of the series. He responded in spectacular fashion when Afghanistan needed him most.

Atal Breaks Tom Latham’s Birthday Record
Before Wednesday, the record for the highest ODI score made on a player’s birthday belonged to Tom Latham.
The New Zealand batter had scored an unbeaten 140 against the Netherlands on his 30th birthday in 2022.
Atal went one better — and then some.
His 143 now stands alone at the top of the birthday ODI scoring chart. The Afghan opener achieved the feat on the same day he turned 25, making the achievement even more remarkable.
The list also features some of the biggest names in international cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar had scored 134 against Australia on his 25th birthday in 1998, while Ross Taylor made 131 against Pakistan during the 2011 World Cup.
Virat Kohli also features prominently in the broader list of remarkable ODI performances on birthdays, including his memorable century against South Africa on his 35th birthday during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
For Atal, however, the latest achievement has put his name alongside those legendary figures in an unusual piece of ODI history.
A Record Partnership With Ibrahim Zadran
Atal’s individual brilliance was complemented by another outstanding performance from Ibrahim Zadran.
After Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 12, Atal and Zadran joined forces and completely changed the momentum of the innings.
The pair produced a remarkable 231-run partnership for the second wicket, coming from just 220 deliveries. It was Afghanistan’s biggest partnership of the series and laid the foundation for a huge total.
Zadran also reached a major milestone during the innings, scoring 107 from 118 balls with 11 fours and a six.
His century came shortly before he was dismissed, but Atal continued the assault and pushed Afghanistan beyond the 340-run mark.
Atal’s Second ODI Century
The Belfast innings was only Atal’s second ODI hundred, but it was easily the most spectacular of the two.
His previous best had been 104 against Zimbabwe. This time, he went well beyond that mark, eventually finishing on 143.
Atal reached his century from 99 balls before accelerating further in the closing stages. His ability to increase the scoring rate after reaching three figures was crucial to Afghanistan’s imposing total.
The knock also significantly improved his ODI career numbers after a relatively modest start to the series.

A Special Day for Afghanistan Cricket
The timing of Atal’s performance made it even more memorable.
It was not simply a personal milestone. His innings helped Afghanistan defeat Ireland by 42 runs, complete a 3-0 series victory and underline their growing strength in ODI cricket.
Atal was named Player of the Match for his match-defining performance.
The result also added another positive chapter to Afghanistan’s preparations for the next major international challenges.
For a side that has rapidly established itself as a competitive force in world cricket, performances from young batters such as Atal and Zadran provide plenty of encouragement.
From a Quiet Start to a Record-Breaking Finish
What makes Atal’s performance particularly interesting is the turnaround within the series.
After registering 42 in one match and falling for a duck in another, the opener could easily have been under pressure.
Instead, he responded with an innings that combined patience, power and remarkable shot-making.
He initially built the innings alongside Zadran before taking greater responsibility once his partner departed. His acceleration in the final stages ensured Afghanistan maintained the momentum required to reach 343.
That ability to adapt his approach during an innings could become one of Atal’s most valuable qualities as his international career develops.
A Name to Watch in Afghanistan’s Batting Future
At 25, Atal is entering an important phase of his career.
Afghanistan already possess several established match-winners, but the emergence of dependable top-order batters is vital if the team wants to compete consistently against the strongest ODI sides.
Atal’s birthday masterpiece will therefore be remembered for more than the record itself.
It showed that he can absorb pressure, build a major innings and finish strongly — all qualities required from a modern-day ODI opener.
For now, though, he can simply enjoy a birthday that few cricketers could ever forget.
143 runs, a series victory, Player of the Match honours and a place at the top of a unique ODI record list.
Sediqullah Atal could hardly have asked for a better 25th birthday.
