Virat Kohli Returns, Three Players Miss Out: India Unveils Revamped ODI Squad for England Series Ahead of Crucial Challenge
With Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah back in action, India reshapes its ODI squad as selectors make key changes before the three-match series against England.
After enduring a disappointing whitewash in the recent limited-overs campaign, Team India now has an opportunity to bounce back as they prepare for a high-profile three-match ODI series against England, beginning on July 14. The selectors have introduced several important changes to the squad, with the biggest headline being the much-awaited return of Virat Kohli.
The veteran batter, who missed India’s recent matches due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final, has recovered and is ready to strengthen the batting lineup once again. His return is expected to provide much-needed experience and stability as India looks to regain momentum in the 50-over format.
One of the players making way for Kohli is promising youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed opener impressed many with a brilliant century against Afghanistan, but despite his strong performance, the selectors opted to restore Kohli to the playing XI, resulting in Jaiswal’s omission from the England squad.
India have also received another massive boost with the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The premier fast bowler has not played competitive cricket since the IPL, with the management carefully managing his workload following his previous back injury concerns. His comeback significantly strengthens India’s pace attack ahead of a challenging English tour.
The squad also sees the return of experienced all-rounder Axar Patel, who replaces Harsh Dubey. Although Dubey delivered encouraging performances during the Afghanistan series, the selectors preferred Axar’s experience and proven ability in pressure situations.

Meanwhile, India suffered another setback after Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out due to injury. The pace-bowling all-rounder has been replaced by Shivam Dube, who returns to India’s ODI setup after spending time away from the format.

There has also been a late change involving the pace department. Harshit Rana, who was initially expected to be available, has been ruled out, prompting the inclusion of Prince Yadav in the squad. Prince had travelled with the team during the Afghanistan series but was not originally named for the England ODIs before receiving the late call-up.
Another notable absentee remains Hardik Pandya. Although he was part of the squad announced for the Afghanistan series, injury concerns prevented him from participating, and he continues to remain unavailable for the England tour.
Despite the changes, India enters the series with confidence after showing encouraging signs in recent ODI cricket. The return of experienced campaigners such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel provides the team with a balanced mix of youth and experience.
The England series will not only be an opportunity to rebuild confidence but also an important step as India continues preparations for upcoming ICC tournaments. Cricket fans will be eager to see whether the returning stars can inspire the Men in Blue to deliver a strong response after a difficult run in recent weeks.
