‘What Was the Point of Picking Him…?’ Mohammed Kaif Questions Team India After Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Ireland Snub

The conclusion of India’s T20I series against Ireland has left fans discussing not just the results on the field, but also the absence of one of the country’s most exciting young talents. Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not get an opportunity to make his international debut, a decision that has now come under scrutiny from former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif.

Sooryavanshi entered the national setup on the back of a sensational Indian Premier League (IPL) season, where he emerged as one of the biggest talking points of the tournament. The youngster amassed an astonishing 776 runs and claimed the prestigious Orange Cap, while maintaining a remarkable strike rate of 237.30.

Given those extraordinary numbers, many cricket followers expected the teenager to receive his maiden cap during the two-match series against Ireland. However, the opportunity never arrived.

Even before the series began, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had indicated that Sooryavanshi would likely have to wait for his chance. The coaching staff chose to continue with the established opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, both of whom played key roles in India’s recent T20 World Cup success.

While the decision was based on continuity and experience, it has not stopped criticism from emerging after the series.

Mohammed Kaif questioned the logic behind selecting a player in the squad but not providing him with an opportunity, particularly when expectations surrounding his inclusion were so high. The former batter suggested that the situation reflects inconsistency in the way young talent is managed and promoted within the national setup.

The debate has quickly gained traction among fans and analysts. Supporters of Sooryavanshi argue that a short bilateral series against Ireland could have been the perfect platform to introduce a promising youngster to international cricket. Others believe the management was justified in backing a proven opening pair that has already delivered results on the global stage.

The discussion also highlights the challenge faced by head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian team management. Balancing immediate success with long-term development is never straightforward, especially when the team possesses both experienced stars and highly talented youngsters waiting in the wings.

For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the disappointment of missing out on a debut will likely serve as additional motivation. At such a young age, the batter still has ample time to establish himself at the highest level, and his performances in domestic and franchise cricket suggest that future opportunities are likely to come.

As Indian cricket continues its transition toward the next generation, the handling of emerging players will remain a closely watched topic. And following the Ireland series, the conversation surrounding Sooryavanshi’s absence is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
