Toyota Breaks Silence on Viral Innova Hycross Breakdown Video: E20 Petrol or Contaminated Fuel Behind the Issue?

A viral video involving a Toyota Innova Hycross has triggered a fresh debate over the safety of E20 petrol in India, forcing Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) to issue an official clarification.

The controversy began after Bihar-based YouTuber Manish Kashyap shared videos claiming that his Innova Hycross hybrid developed engine problems after being refuelled with E20 petrol.

The owner alleged that the vehicle, which had travelled around 12,000 km, started showing symptoms including engine vibration, knocking sounds and breakdown-like behaviour after using ethanol-blended petrol.

The videos quickly gained attention online, with many vehicle owners questioning whether India’s nationwide transition to E20 fuel could affect older vehicles and modern engines.

However, Toyota has now stated that the problem was not caused by E20 petrol.

Toyota Says Innova Hycross Is Fully Compatible With E20 Fuel

Responding to the viral claims, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said the Innova Hycross involved in the incident was designed, tested and certified to operate with E20 petrol.

The company clarified that its technical inspection found no damage related to ethanol-blended fuel.

In its statement, Toyota said:

“The Toyota Hycross in question is E20-compatible vehicle that is designed, tested and certified for the use of E20 fuel.”

According to the automaker, the investigation revealed that the issue occurred because of fuel contamination rather than the ethanol percentage in petrol.

Toyota added that no damage was found in the vehicle’s fuel system or related engine components.

Fuel Tank and Lines Cleaned After Inspection

As part of the inspection process, Toyota technicians drained the fuel tank and cleaned the fuel lines before refilling the vehicle with standard E20 petrol.

After the procedure, the company said the Innova Hycross was tested and found to be operating normally before being returned to the customer.

Toyota maintained that the incident was caused by “non-standard and contaminated fuel” and was not linked to the use of E20 petrol.

The company also advised customers to purchase fuel only from authorised and trusted fuel stations to reduce the risk of contamination or adulteration.

In the videos shared online, Manish Kashyap documented the inspection process at a Toyota service centre.

The footage showed technicians removing the fuel tank and collecting different fuel samples from various parts of the fuel system.

The owner highlighted visible differences in the colour and appearance of the samples and questioned how contaminated fuel could enter a vehicle despite customers following recommended fuel standards.

Kashyap also said he purchased the hybrid version of the Innova Hycross by paying approximately ₹5 lakh more than the regular model because he wanted a more environmentally friendly vehicle.

He argued that customers choosing E20-compatible vehicles should not face unexpected expenses if problems occur while using recommended fuel.

The incident has brought the ongoing E20 petrol discussion back into focus.

India completed its nationwide transition to petrol containing 20% ethanol in 2025 as part of its effort to reduce crude oil imports and promote cleaner fuel alternatives.
