‘Heads Could Roll’ After India’s T20I Setback? Sunil Gavaskar Urges BCCI to Stay Calm, Says ‘That Would Be an Extreme Step’

India’s recent T20 International performances have sparked widespread debate, but cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the focus should remain on fixing technical shortcomings rather than making hasty decisions.

With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set to review the team’s disappointing performances in the T20I series against Ireland and England, speculation has grown that significant changes could follow. However, Gavaskar has urged the cricket board not to overreact, reminding everyone that India lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title just a few months ago.

“Extreme Step” After World Cup Success?

Writing in his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar questioned reports suggesting that major changes could be on the horizon.

“The BCCI is going to do a review of the defeat, and there are rumours that a few heads could roll. That would be an extreme step, for barely four months ago India were the world champions and still are No. 2 in the ICC rankings.”

The batting great believes that a short run of poor performances should not overshadow the achievements of the team, especially after winning a global tournament so recently.

India’s Recent T20I Struggles

India’s form has dipped during a period of transition in the shortest format.

Under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, the team is still searching for its first victory, with reports indicating India has yet to register a win in six T20 Internationals under his leadership.

The squad has also been without several experienced players. Jasprit Bumrah was rested after a demanding Indian Premier League (IPL) season, while Hardik Pandya has been sidelined due to injury. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has also been absent from India’s recent T20I plans.

These factors, combined with challenging overseas conditions, have contributed to India’s struggles in the UK.

Technical Issues, Not Flat Pitches

Many observers have blamed batting-friendly IPL pitches for India’s difficulties against pace and bounce overseas. Gavaskar, however, disagrees with that assessment.

According to him, the problem lies more in batting technique than in domestic playing conditions.

He noted that several Indian batters have struggled against short-pitched bowling even during the IPL, pointing out issues such as excessive weight on the front foot and limited back-foot movement, making it difficult to counter deliveries that rise sharply toward the batter.

In his view, these are technical flaws that require coaching and long-term improvement rather than sweeping changes to the squad.

Boundary Sizes Also Under Scrutiny

Gavaskar also raised concerns over the relatively short boundaries at several Indian cricket venues.

He suggested that many sixes struck in domestic cricket would have been straightforward catches on grounds with larger playing dimensions. According to the former captain, expanding boundary sizes could encourage more disciplined shot selection and better prepare Indian batters for international cricket, particularly in countries like South Africa, where conditions are faster and more demanding.

He questioned whether there is enough willingness to implement such changes despite most Indian stadiums having the capacity for larger boundary dimensions.

Review Meeting Ahead

The BCCI is expected to conduct a detailed review of India’s recent performances, examining both team results and future planning.

While discussions around possible changes continue, Gavaskar has made it clear that sustained technical improvement and patience should take priority over immediate reactions.

With major ICC tournaments still on the horizon, India’s challenge will be to learn from recent setbacks while maintaining confidence in the core group that delivered World Cup success only months ago.
