After Cancer, I Chose Happiness, Sonali Bendre Opens Up on Avoiding Dark Roles, But ‘Raakh’ Made Her Say Yes

Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre has shared how her life—and choices—changed dramatically after battling cancer. Having been diagnosed with stage four metastatic cancer in 2018, the actor emerged stronger, but with a renewed perspective on life and work.

Speaking recently, Sonali admitted that “after such a dark phase, I only wanted to do roles that felt hopeful and light.”

Choosing Positivity After a Dark Phase

After her recovery, Sonali made a conscious decision to protect her mental and emotional well-being. She revealed, “I really wanted to play roles that would keep me happy… I had been through a really dark period.”

This meant actively avoiding intense, emotionally draining characters—something quite different from the kind of layered roles she is known for.

Her comeback project, the web series The Broken News, reflected this approach, marking her return with a balanced and meaningful role.

What Made Her Say Yes to ‘Raakh’?

Despite her preference for lighter content, Sonali surprised many by taking on a deeply emotional role in Raakh.

The series, inspired by the chilling Ranga-Billa case, explores grief, trauma, and justice.

Sonali admitted that initially, “Raakh wasn’t something I was looking for.” However, the script’s depth and storytelling convinced her otherwise.

“It was so compelling that I couldn’t say no,” she shared, highlighting how powerful narratives can sometimes override personal boundaries.

Mixed Feelings About Screen Time

While the experience of working on Raakh was fulfilling, Sonali didn’t shy away from expressing a small disappointment.

“It’s not the length I like… I would’ve loved to see more of me in the series,” she said candidly.

Yet, she quickly added that taking the risk was worth it, calling the project “an exceptionally amazing experience.”

A New Phase in Her Career

Interestingly, Sonali believes that the kind of roles she is being offered today are far more diverse than what she received during her peak in the 1990s.

“I’m in a good space now,” she noted, reflecting both personal growth and the evolving landscape of storytelling in Indian entertainment.

Directed by Prosit Roy, Anusha Nandakumar, and Sandeep Saket, Raakh features a strong ensemble cast including Ali Fazal and Aamir Bashir.
