At 68, Sunny Deol says he still feels like the “same young hero” and credits his early 5:30 AM workout routine, including cardio and weight training, for keeping him active.

Age may be just a number for Sunny Deol.

At 68, the veteran Bollywood star continues to embrace the larger-than-life action roles that have defined his career, and he says he will only move away from playing such characters when he genuinely feels old from within.

Ahead of the release of his upcoming film Batwara 1947, Sunny opened up about ageing, fitness and his daily routine during an interview with Savera Star Talks.

Asked about the difference between his career and that of his late father Dharmendra, particularly during their 60s, Sunny explained that he never approached his age as a limitation.

“I never realised what my age is,” he said.

The actor added that the day he genuinely feels old will be the day he considers stepping away from such roles.

“I still feel like the same young hero. I have been doing the same thing I used to do before, nothing less,” Sunny said.

Sunny Deol’s Day Starts Before Sunrise

So, what keeps the actor going?

Sunny revealed that his day begins remarkably early.

The Gadar star said he has always been an early riser and generally wakes up at around 5:30 AM, before sunrise.

“I have always had a habit of waking up early in the morning. I wake up before sunrise, around 5:30 am. It is an automatic cycle for me,” he said.

His morning does not end with simply getting out of bed.

Sunny said he works out after waking up, combining cardio and weight training as part of his routine.

“I workout after waking up because the adrenal becomes positive for the whole day. I do it on my own – both cardio and weight training,” he explained.

The actor reportedly spends around one to two hours exercising in the morning.

But his approach to fitness is not about chasing an exaggerated physique.

‘I Do It Because I Enjoy It’

Sunny’s fitness philosophy appears to be considerably simpler than the highly regimented routines often associated with Bollywood stars.

Rather than trying to copy another actor’s body or maintain a particular look, he said exercise is something he genuinely enjoys and something that helps him feel healthier.

That attitude could also explain why the actor has managed to maintain an active lifestyle while continuing to take on physically demanding roles well into his late 60s.

For Sunny, fitness appears to be less about appearance and more about staying energetic enough to keep doing what he loves.

Sunny Deol Admits Dieting Has Never Been Easy

If his exercise routine is disciplined, his relationship with dieting is considerably more relaxed.

Sunny openly admitted that maintaining a strict diet has not always worked for him.

“I tried dieting but I ended up eating samosa and desi ghee with parantha,” he said.

The actor also reminisced about his younger days, saying he used to eat freely without worrying much about nutrition or fitness trends.

“We used to eat a lot at your age, never even thought about anything,” he recalled while talking about his children.

The comment offers a glimpse into a more old-school approach to food — one where traditional Indian meals and indulgence were part of everyday life.

Why Sunny Deol Still Wants to Play Action Heroes

Sunny Deol’s continued preference for action-oriented roles is particularly interesting because his father, Dharmendra, gradually moved towards more mature and character-driven parts as he grew older.

Sunny, however, does not appear ready to follow exactly the same path.

His reasoning is straightforward: he does not feel old.

As long as he continues to feel physically and mentally capable, he wants to keep playing the kind of characters audiences have associated with him for decades.

That mindset has helped Sunny remain one of Bollywood’s most recognisable action stars across generations.

‘Batwara 1947’ Is His Next Big Release

Sunny will next appear in Batwara 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi.

The Partition-era drama also features Karan Deol, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi in prominent roles.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on August 14, 2026.

With a new film on the way and an early-morning routine that begins before most people have even started their day, Sunny Deol appears to have no intention of slowing down just because the number on his birthday cake has changed.

At 68, his message is simple: if you still feel young, keep moving like one.
