Shubman Gill walks off retired hurt after suffering discomfort in his right leg during his fluent 80-run knock against England in the first ODI.

Team India suffered an anxious moment during the first ODI against England after captain Shubman Gill was forced to leave the field despite being in complete control of his innings.

The stylish right-hander had played a fluent knock, scoring 80 runs off 75 deliveries, including 11 boundaries and one six, and appeared well on course for another international century. However, the momentum came to an abrupt halt in the 26th over when Gill suddenly showed signs of discomfort.

While attempting to continue his innings, the Indian skipper struggled to move freely and was soon seen clutching the back of his right leg. Moments later, he went down on the pitch and required attention, raising immediate concerns among teammates, commentators and fans.

Initially, it appeared that Gill might simply be dealing with severe cramping after spending considerable time at the crease. However, his inability to stand comfortably suggested the issue could be more serious than ordinary muscle fatigue.

After receiving medical assistance on the field, Gill tried to assess whether he could continue batting. But the discomfort proved too significant, and the Indian captain eventually decided to retire hurt, walking back to the dressing room to avoid aggravating the injury.

His departure came at a stage when India was well placed, but losing a set batter in outstanding form was undoubtedly a setback for the visitors.

Although there was no immediate official confirmation regarding the exact nature of the injury, early indications suggested that Gill was experiencing discomfort in the back of his right leg, with cramps being considered one possible reason. The team management is expected to monitor his condition closely before providing a detailed medical update.

The incident has naturally sparked concern among Indian supporters, especially with a packed international calendar ahead. As one of India’s most dependable top-order batters, Gill’s fitness remains crucial for the team’s plans in both the ongoing series and upcoming major assignments.

Despite the unfortunate interruption, the 25-year-old once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of world cricket’s brightest batting talents. His elegant stroke play and composed approach had put England’s bowlers under pressure before the injury cut short what looked like a memorable innings.

Fans will now be hoping that the setback is only temporary and that Shubman Gill returns to full fitness in time for the remainder of the ODI series.
